Holiday Weekends ? 365 Days of Random

This weekend is a bit of a ?double special? holiday weekend for me. Today is ?Canada Day? the Canadian equivalent of the 4th of July. So while I worked today (from home) my family back at home has been getting ready for a typical summer holiday weekend celebration. They are at the cottage of some family friends having a BBQ, going swimming, and generally spending time with good friends and family. Later tonight they will set off fireworks over the lake and continue the celebration into the evening. Monday (as you know) is the 4th of July. My BF?s building is hosting a BBQ later monday afternoon and they are making a few tickets per apartment available to go up on the roof and watch the DC fireworks. So, of course, we?re planning to do that.

But what makes this weekend so great for me is that a typical weekend is book ended by two great holidays from both of my ?homes?. I feel like I get to celebrate all weekend. Tonight I am taking X and my BF to the movies. Tomorrow after climbing my BF and I are going to a cook out at his buddy?s place where we get to spend the afternoon and evening hanging with some awesome people. After that we?re heading out in DC to meet up with some other friends of my BFs to continue the celebrations. Sunday will largely be a day of rest I?d imagine? but Squeaks and I are also talking about some late afternoon climbing? or perhaps if it?s not too hot out my BF and I will finally take that bike ride into the city we?ve been talking about since early spring. Then of course, Monday is July 4th and we?ve got the BBQ and fireworks.

Growing up the Canada day weekend was one of my favorite weekends of the summer. Typically it was the first weekend after school had ended and everyone was itching to get out and start enjoying the summer. My family had generally just moved out to the cottage for the summer. The small ?village? (town really) near where my family?s cottage was did one of the best fireworks displays and street festivals outside Canada?s National capital (Ottawa). Since it was so close we ALWAYS went to the fireworks. When I got a bit older I would be at my friends house (or cottage) and head out to the ?lake? for the fireworks with friends. I?d always see my parents and sisters there that we?d end up all hanging out and just enjoying the perfect start to summer.

Since I?ve been down here I?ve always spent the 4th with Squeaks and her hubby. Typically some members of his family are visiting and we have a picnic and or a BBQ and drink some beer and chill out enjoying each other?s company. Last year Mr. W?s entire family was in DC for the 4th and we hung out at at Squeaks & Mr W?s home. Their nephew C is one of the cutest kids I?ve ever seen and man is he a flirt. When he?s older he is most definitely going to be a ladies man. He took to me like crazy and was basically glued to my side for most of the day. They close off the street in their neighbourhood where everyone can go sit on the street and watch the DC fireworks. It?s a little further away than my BFs place is but it?s still an almost perfect view of the monument and it?s a great view of the fireworks above the DC skyline? without the accompanying noise. It?s just a great place to me.

This year, since my BF and I are going to hang out on his roof top I will be starting some new traditions. Although I think that others (without tickets for the roof) are invited to the BBQ at his building and so I think we may extend the invitation to Squeaks and Mr W so that at least some of the almost 5 year consistency is maintained. Either way, it?s shaping up to be a wonderful weekend and with our VP closing the office early it?s starting now.
