We owe everything to consoles. Their sheer power and strength continue to marvel in this modern age. Whether large, small, square or handheld, consoles continue to break the boundaries of gaming potential. Without them, we would still be scanning over the system requirements of our PC purchase to discover if our computer is fast enough to play the latest release.
With Nintendo?s announcement at this year?s E3, the Wii U called into play the next generation of gaming but the console war is not over till the dust settles. The staff at The Gamer Studio called upon their fondest gaming memories to cast their vote for the greatest console of all time.
In all, nineteen systems received votes. Modern consoles are in for the fight of their life as they square off against the legacy of their predecessors.

4. (Tie) Nintendo 64
The Nintendo 64 holds an important part of video game history. In its day, the Nintendo 64 battled notable consoles like the Playstation but with a reasonable price tag and funky controller, it spawned the birth of 3D gaming for Nintendo. The Nintendo 64 was limited by its storage capacity but this didn?t stop developers from pushing the boundaries of this system. And if that?s not enough, many critics will argue that the best game ever created debuted on this system. (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)
If only Mario Kart, Mario 64, StarFox, Smash Bros. and Zelda were on this platform, I would still would have voted for it. So many memorable titles and a fantastic controller that I still think is a design marvel. The N64 was an absolute joy to play and still is!

4. (Tie). Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Released in 1991, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was the anticipated follow-up to the Nintendo Entertainment System. Although it was released almost two years after its closet competitor, the Sega Genesis, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System went on to become the best-selling console in the 16-bit wars (49 million). Super Mario World sold 20 million copies on this system, a mark that beats out several of today?s best-selling games (even if it was a pack-in).
This is where I truly became a gamer. Every genre I love today (Outside of FPS and RTS) was built on the hours playing defining games such as Zelda, Super Mario World, (Which I can still beat 100% from memory to this day) and Final Fantasy VI.

3. Xbox 360
The jury is still out on the fate of video games? seventh generation of gaming but the Xbox 360 makes a strong case for the number one slot. It?s second only to the Nintendo Wii in terms of sales, but boasts this generation?s best online service. A slew of stellar first-party releases makes this console the all-around winner between the big three.
Modern perfection. Nearly all of my games nowadays are played on this console and it?s a great experience every time. Achievement points, great online service, and games that are always good make this my go-to console for all the new games. Plus, I can?t forget what I feel is the most well-designed and comfortable controller I?ve ever held.

2. Playstation
The Playstation was the first console to break the 100 million mark in terms of consoles sold. When cartridge games were limited in their capacity, the Playstation was the first successful console to use the disc format. Games became longer, richer and more complex due to the Playstation?s power and saw valuable reboots to series such as Final Fantasy and the birth of legendary franchises.
My parents would often whip out the PS and play a bit of Tomb Raider. I would be allowed to stay up longer because of the occasion and watch and admire their skillful wall climbing and dinosaur shooting antics but closing my innocent ears to the swearing and cussing as Lara was frequently impaled by a spike pit. Aside from Tomb Raider, I was obsessed with Heart of Darkness and Toy Story (I was young!).
-Matt Calladine, Media Director
My Playstation, like most of my consoles, was 2nd hand. I got it in 1998 with a 2nd hand copy of Final Fantasy VII. From there I was hooked. Between 1998 and 2002 I completed that game at least 30 times. I still have the game saves to prove it. I just couldn't get enough of the game, or the console. The Playstation introduced me to many of today's legendary protagonists like Lara Croft. Also, if you never played Hogs of War you missed out big time!

1. Playstation 2
The king. The stand-alone fact that the Playstation 2 is the best selling console (150 million) of all time is enough to give it the number one slot. Released in 2000, the Playstation 2 played DVDs and boasted backwards compatibility. With already a strong brand behind it, third party developers jumped on its bandwagon and helped bolster its strong title lineup. And the death blow, the Playstation 2 is the only console from the sixth generation that you can still buy brand new. (The Dreamcast, Xbox and Gamecube all have been discontinued)
Everything you want was on this system. Its library of titles and it's solid build are tough to beat. It also included DVD playback back when it was an expensive piece of machinery to have in the household.

This is the holy grail of gaming consoles (especially for RPG?s) and something for other consoles to look up to and take inspiration from. From the early greats like Final Fantasy X to the late releases like Persona 4, RPG?s are done like no other on this console. Of course, the console had more than RPG?s with amazing games such as Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 and the God of War series. Graphics became better, sound started to be more orchestral instead of MIDIs, and the sheer amount of content a disc could hold was staggering at the time.
