Food and Drink

I completely forgot to post about it at the time, but the weekend of the royal wedding, was also the Exeter Food and Drink Festival, so of course, we had to pop along for a look. They have masses of local food producers all in one place, and many with lots of delicious goodies to sample. Don't those cakes just look fanstastic - we were very taken with this stall, it has to be said.

It opens your eyes to realise just how many great food producers there are locally to us. We used to get all our groceries from a supermarket called OwnOnline - it was like doing a Tesco/sainsburys online shop, but all the products were either grown locally, or came from local distributors, where nothing was available locally (eg tea/toilet rolls etc). You could pretty much get an entire shop through them and it was a wonderful service - good for the environment, and delicious food too. Sadly, it proved to be too expensive to sustain and they fell by the wayside a couple of years ago, but attending the festival has made me think that I want to do more to use local producers where I can.

So, what did we get (no photos, because we ate it all too fast) but highlights were:
Fishcakes from http://www.devonfishcakes.com/ - so much good fish inside them, and lovely crisp breadcrumbs, so M informs me::

Cheese Twists - looked, smelt and tasted delicious - but sadly can't remember who made them

Olives - again dont have a link to the supplier, but they were based in Mortonhampstead and were the most delicious ever.

And my personal favourite http://www.bloomberry.co.uk/ - providers of my drink of choice from now on - Pomegranate Juice and Hibiscus. they have lots of other lovely flavours too, and they supply one of my favourite pubs - http://www.fivebells.co.uk/ just outside of Clyst Hydon. And they also had a great stall making and selling smoothies - you had to peddle your own bike to make the blender work and create your smoothie - as you can see from the photo, it was a big hit with the Bear - and was, apparently the most delicious smoothie ever - but after all that hard work, he was only willing to share it with Butterfly, and I can't say I really blame him!

We had a fantastic time - we didn't stop for any of the demonstrations although there are plenty going on, but we did really enjoy ourselves - the children especially - hopefully we are raising little gourmets for the future!
