Azerbaijan: 40 arrested in Eurovision terror plot

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) ? Security services in Azerbaijan say they have arrested 40 suspects and seized weapons as they thwarted a series of planned terror attacks against the Eurovision Song Contest.

Targets included the song contest venue and major hotels housing foreigners, the National Security Ministry said in a statement Wednesday.

Azerbaijan has in recent months reported being the target of terrorist activities planned by groups with ties to Al-Qaida and Iran, and this appears to be most extravagant alleged plot revealed to date.

An oil-rich nation of 9 million people wedged between Russia and Iran, Azerbaijan has nurtured close relations with the United States and played an active role in Western-led counter-terrorist programs. That policy has placed a strain on its ties with Iran, which hosts a sizable ethnic Azeri community.

The statement Wednesday said other plots included plans for an assassination attempt on President Ilham Aliyev in April, as well as attacks on religious pilgrimage sites and police stations.

Officials said 40 people have been arrested. Weapons seized included 13 assault rifles, one machine gun, 12 handguns, three rifles, 3,400 rounds of bullets, 62 hand grenades, and several kilograms of explosives.

The statement provided no details on when the arrests took place.

"The armed group set itself the aim of mounting terrorist attacks in several regions of Azerbaijan, creating a mood of powerlessness and lawlessness, sowing panic, ethnic and religious enmity, disrupting the public peace and damaging Azerbaijan's international image," the statement said.

The Eurovision attack would have centered on the Baku Crystal Hall, where the singing competition concluded early Sunday, officials said. Other planned targets included Marriot and Hilton hotels in the capital, Baku.

At least one suspected plotter, 37-year-old Azerbaijani citizen Vugar Padarov, and a security agent were killed during raids to shut down the terrorist group, the statement said.

Padarov was identified in an April security statement as the leader of a group that had received religious training in Syria. Some of its members had weapons training with the Jihad Islami group in Pakistan and took part in fighting NATO-led troops in Afghanistan, the National Security Ministry said.

In March, the ministry announced the arrests of 22 Azerbaijani citizens it said had been hired by Iran to stage terror attacks against the U.S. and Israeli embassies as well as against western-linked groups and companies. It said they had been trained in Iran by the Revolutionary Guard.

Earlier this year, it announced the arrest of several other suspected terrorists allegedly working for Iran's secret services.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A chance discovery of 80-year-old photo plates in a Danish basement is providing new insight into how Greenland glaciers are melting today.

Researchers at the National Survey and Cadastre of Denmark - that country's federal agency responsible for surveys and mapping - had been storing the glass plates since explorer Knud Rasmussen's expedition to the southeast coast of Greenland in the early 1930s.

In this week's online edition of Nature Geoscience, Ohio State University researchers and colleagues in Denmark describe how they analyzed ice loss in the region by comparing the images on the plates to aerial photographs and satellite images taken from World War II to today.

Taken together, the imagery shows that glaciers in the region were melting even faster in the 1930s than they are today, said Jason Box, associate professor of geography and researcher at the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State. A brief cooling period starting in the mid-20th century allowed new ice to form, and then the melting began to accelerate again in the 2000s.

"Because of this study, we now have a detailed historical analogue for more recent glacier loss," Box said. "And we've confirmed that glaciers are very sensitive indicators of climate."

Pre-satellite observations of Greenland glaciers are rare. Anders Anker Bjrk, doctoral fellow at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and lead author of the study, is trying to compile all such imagery. He found a clue in the archives of The Arctic Institute in Copenhagen in 2011.

"We found flight journals for some old planes, and in them was a reference to National Survey and Cadastre of Denmark," Bjrk said.

As it happens, researchers at the National Survey had already contacted Bjrk about a find of their own.

"They were cleaning up in the basement and had found some old glass plates with glaciers on them. The reason the plates were forgotten was that they were recorded for mapping, and once the map was produced they didn't have much value."

Those plates turned out to be documentation of Rasmussen's 7th Thule Expedition to Greenland. They contained aerial photographs of land, sea and glaciers in the southeast region of the country, along with travel photos of Rasmussen's team.

The researchers digitized all the old images and used software to look for differences in the shape of the southeast Greenland coastline where the ice meets the Atlantic Ocean. Then they calculated the distance the ice front moved in each time period.

Over the 80 years, two events stand out: glacial retreats from 1933-1934 and 2000-2010. In the 1930s, fewer glaciers were melting than are today, and most of those that were melting were land-terminating glaciers, meaning that they did not contact the sea.

Those that were melting retreated an average of 20 meters per year - the fastest retreating at 374 meters per year. Fifty-five percent of the glaciers in the study had similar or higher retreat rates during the 1930s than they do today.

Still, more glaciers in southeast Greenland are retreating today, and the average ice loss is 50 meters per year. That's because a few glaciers with very fast melting rates - including one retreating at 887 meters per year - boost the overall average.

But to Box, the most interesting part of the study is what happened between the two melting events.

From 1943-1972, southeast Greenland cooled - probably due to sulfur pollution, which reflects sunlight away from the earth.

Sulfur dioxide is a poisonous gas produced by volcanoes and industrial processes. It has been tied to serious health problems and death, and is also the main ingredient in acid rain. Its presence in the atmosphere peaked just after the Clean Air Act was established in 1963. As it was removed from the atmosphere, the earlier warming resumed.

The important point is not that deadly pollution caused the climate to cool, but rather that the brief cooling allowed researchers to see how Greenland ice responded to the changing climate.

The glaciers responded to the cooling more rapidly than researchers had seen in earlier studies. Sixty percent of the glaciers advanced during that time, while 12 percent were stationary. And now that the warming has resumed, the glacial retreat is dominated by marine-terminating outlet glaciers, the melting of which contributes to sea level rise.

"From these images, we see that the mid-century cooling stabilized the glaciers," Box said. "That suggests that if we want to stabilize today's accelerating ice loss, we need to see a little cooling of our own."

Southeast Greenland is a good place to study the effects of climate change, he explained, because the region is closely tied to air and water circulation patterns in the North Atlantic.

"By far, more storms pass through this region - transporting heat into the Arctic - than anywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere. Climate change brings changes in snowfall and air temperature that compete for influence on a glacier's net behavior," he said.

Antimatter-Powered Supernovae (preview)

The largest stars die in explosions more powerful than anyone thought possible?some triggered in part by the production of antimatter

Highest-energy supernovae might look quite spectacular from a planet orbiting the exploding star, but any civilization would most likely be obliterated. Image: Illustration by Ron Miller

In Brief

  • In recent years several supernovae have turned out to be more powerful and long-lasting than any observed before.
  • Archival images showed that the stars that gave rise to some supernovae were about 100 times as massive as the sun: according to accepted theory, stars this big were not supposed to explode.
  • Some supernovae may have been ther?mo?nuclear explosions triggered by the creation of pairs of particles of matter and antimatter.
  • The first generation of stars in the universe, which created the materials that later formed planets, may have exploded through a similar mechanism.

In the middle of 2005 the W. M. Keck observatory on Mauna Kea in Hawaii completed an upgrade of one of its giant twin telescopes. By automatically correcting for atmospheric turbulence, the instrument could now produce images as sharp as those from the Hubble Space Telescope. Shrinivas Kulkarni of the California Institute of Technology urged young Caltech researchers?myself among them?to apply for observing time. Once the rest of the astronomy community realized how terrific the telescopes were, he warned us, securing a slot would become very competitive.

Taking this advice, I teamed up with my then fellow postdocs Derek Fox and Doug Leonard to attempt a type of study that previously had been carried out almost solely with the Hubble: hunting for supernova progenitors. In other words, we wanted to know what stars look like when they are about to explode.

HOUSEography: Family Room: Putting my feet up in comfort

Hope everyone had a great long weekend. ?We spent part of it in upstate New York with my family for my sister-in-law's baby shower. ?So excited to meet that little guy or girl - they aren't finding out the sex which I love! We didn't find out for either of our children and although the suspense nearly killed me (especially the second time around), it made the delivery that much more fun and exciting. ?Back to the blog...

When we got our new sectional a few months ago, it quickly became apparent that our coffee table was not going to cut it any more. It was a hand-me-down from my parents who bought it at Macy's circa 1973 soon after they were married. ?I really wanted an ottoman here instead to make movie and TV watching more comfortable and enjoyable. ?We also don't need a coffee table here because we have one in our living room which is great for games, puzzles, etc. ? So, I set about looking for an ottoman. I was looking for something between 30 and 34" square. This gave us a little more floor space but gave everyone sitting on the sectional a place to rest their feet. ?I was open to fabric and leather, but did not want pleather or vinyl. Turns out - this was no easy feat! ?Most ottomans were small - around 24" or huge McMansion ottomans - closer to 40" squire, or made of vinyl/pleather. ?Not going to work for our small family room. ?You can see some of my finds on my Pinterest board.

Then I considered making an ottoman. ?In theory, it probably would have worked but I think ultimately, I would have ended up buying something after a few years. I feared it would look homemade which I most certainly did not want in my family room where we spend all of our time. ?

I scoured HomeGoods/Marshalls/TJ Maxx, Target, World Market, Macys, JC Penney, Kohls, etc., but none of my discount sources were revealing anything great. I found a few good options on One Kings Lane and Joss & Main but nothing perfect enough to take the plunge on something non-returnable!

Finally, it came along on Gilt in a Safaviah sale earlier this month. ?Clean lines, not too much tufting to interfere with magnatiles or other toys which make it onto this surface. ?And the $239.00 price tag didn't hurt either. It's just about 30" square and the fabric is called gray but it has tan undertones which work well with the rug, curtains, and other golds and greens in the room. ?
Fortunately the 3 week delivery window turned out to be only about 4 days! ?I couldn't believe it when I came home and found it on my front porch on a Thursday afternoon. ?When we first put it together, right before Alex's birthday party, I have to admit, I thought it was way too small. ?In hindsight, I think it was just an adjustment from the too-big coffee table which was wider and taller. The ottoman actually fits the scale of the room and sofa better than the table did.

I love the tweed-like texture which plays off the sofa and other fabrics in the room. ?I put together a little summer centerpiece while I was at it. ?All the better for blogging from!

Any furniture purchases in your neck of the woods? ?Fun Memorial Day weekend stuff? ?Did you watch the Hatfields and McCoys on the History Channel? ?

Sunday, May 27: Faithful Risk for Living Faith | Daily Compass

Inspiration:?

?

Spend a few minutes letting the compassion that is in your heart wash over you. Then let that compassion spill out into the world as justice.

Contemplative spirituality leads to and supports active spirituality. When contemplative spirituality is only about self-improvement and self-regulation, then it loses the spiritual piece and becomes another set of practices, like turning off the lights when we leave a room. Good and useful, yes, but not something that moves us out of our comfort zones and into working with others to bring more compassion, merciful justice, steadfast love, or ecological renewal to this world. The fruits of practice that is self-focused are personal. The fruits of true spiritual practices, of living faithfully, are contributing to the goodness of the whole.

New model of geological strata may aid oil extraction, water recovery and earth history studies

May 25, 2012

A new modeling study contradicts a long-held belief of geologists that pore sizes and chemical compositions are uniform throughout a given strata, which are horizontal slices of sedimentary rock. By understanding the variety of pore sizes and spatial patterns in strata, geologists can help achieve more production from underground oil reservoirs and water aquifers. Better understanding also means more efficient use of potential underground carbon storage sites, and better evaluations of the possible movement of radionuclides in nuclear waste depositories to determine how well the waste will ...

Dos Santos expects stiff challenge from Mir

LAS VEGAS ? The theme for the Ultimate Fighting Championship lately seems to have been built around bumpy roads to title fights.

And UFC 146 Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas is no different. Heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos puts his title on the line for the first time when he meets two-time former champion Frank Mir. But Mir's path to a shot at his third title is steeped in controversy not of his making.

Dos Santos (14-1, 8-0 UFC), a heavy-handed Brazilian with 12 knockouts on his resume, was scheduled to fight former Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem, the top contender after beating Brock Lesnar in December. But when Overeem failed a random drug test in April with elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone level at more than twice what the Nevada Athletic Commission allows, he was yanked from the fight.

Mir (16-2, 14-2 UFC), already booked for a fight on the same card, moved up a spot for a chance to add to his legacy just a month before the fight.

"I guess people are looking for me to say something special about it, but a fight's a fight," said Mir, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt regarded as one of the best submission-savvy heavyweights in history. "I was glad I was in good enough shape to take the opportunity."

Dos Santos, for his part, said he doesn't care who he fights as long as it's a level playing field, alluding to Overeem's failed test that has him out until at least December.

"Mir is a really dangerous opponent because he's really good on the ground, he has good striking skills," dos Santos said. "He's a good challenge for me.

"I don't care who is going to be my opponent, but I hope they are fighting like me ? clean."

UFC 146 is the first all-heavyweight main card in UFC history. The preliminary card features a featherweight bout between Diego Brandao, winner of Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series, and Darren Elkins, a two-time Indiana state wrestling champion from Hobart who goes after his third straight victory in the division after dropping down from lightweight.

Hamels all business vs. Nats

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:17 p.m. ET May 23, 2012

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cole Hamels didn't hit any Washington batters this time, and the Nationals hitters barely touched Hamels.

Hamels pitched eight scoreless innings, finishing up by retiring Bryce Harper on a grounder as the Philadelphia Phillies snapped a season-long four-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 4-1 victory over Washington.

Hamels (7-1) didn't allow a hit until Danny Espinosa doubled with one out in the sixth. The left-hander won his seventh straight decision, allowing four hits and striking out eight.

Hamels faced Washington for the first time since intentionally hitting the 19-year-old Harper on May 6. The incident sparked a firestorm, with Hamels earning a five-game suspension and Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo getting fined for his critical comments of Hamels.

"First and foremost, I'm happy about stopping the skid we've had," Hamels said. "I felt confident in my stuff."

Harper singled in the sixth. The Phillies led 3-0 in the eighth when Harper grounded out with a runner on third to end the inning.

"We just couldn't get anything going off Hamels," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "You have to tip your hat to him. He's tough. He's done that to a lot of people."

Shane Victorino homered, doubled and drove in two runs. Adam LaRoche homered with one out in the ninth off Jonathan Papelbon. LaRoche snapped an 0-for-19 skid.

The Phillies' victory ended Washington's franchise-record six-game winning streak in Philadelphia. The Phils have won just two of their last 11 games overall against the Nationals, with Hamels' victory at Washington on May 6 the other one.

"It was a very good game," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "I liked the way we played. I was trying to get us loose. I was trying to do some things to loosen things up. You shouldn't be tight on our team. We'll let you play."

Despite the Nationals' recent dominance of the five-time defending NL East champion Phillies, Manuel has confidence in his club.

"Both of us have real good starting pitching," he said. "I think it's close. I think we got `em, though."

"Tonight's win was big for us," he added. "We're going to win some more. We ain't going nowhere."

Carlos Ruiz doubled and singled twice while batting cleanup for the first time in his major league career. Manuel juggled a lineup that had scored four total runs in its last three games.

"It turned out pretty good," Manuel said.

Ruiz got a bruise on his right wrist after taking a hard foul ball hit by Espinosa in the off the right wrist in the eighth inning. X-rays were negative and Ruiz is day-to-day.

Edwin Jackson (1-2) allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings.

Mike Fontenot hit an RBI single with two outs in the second, and Victorino's two-out double in the third drove in Hunter Pence.

After Espinosa doubled in the sixth, Harper followed with a single to right field. But Pence made a strong throw home and Ruiz made a good tag after a difficult hop in front of the plate for the out.

"That's where defense really saved us," Hamels said. "You don't want the opposing team to get the momentum. That was a really big play."

The Phillies went up 3-0 in the seventh when Fontenot doubled, went to third on Hamels' sacrifice bunt and scored on a suicide-squeeze by Juan Pierre.

Philadelphia shortstop Freddy Galvis made two outstanding defensive plays, robbing Ian Desmond on a chopper up the middle and later adding an over-the-head grab on pinch-hitter Steve Lombardozzi's medium fly. The crowd erupted in chants of "Fred-dy! Fred-dy!"

Victorino homered with two outs in the eighth off Henry Rodriguez, making his first relief appearance since being demoted as the closer following Monday's game.

Harper made an excellent running catch in the fifth, racing back to the warning track to snare Pierre's liner. The ball hit and popped out of Harper's glove before he retrieved it after a step.

NOTES: Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins missed his third straight game after the birth of his daughter on Sunday night. Rollins is on the three-day paternity list. He is expected to rejoin the team for Thursday's game in St. Louis, and the Phillies opened a roster spot by optioning C Erik Kratz to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. ... The crowd of 43,926 was the 228th consecutive sellout in Philadelphia and 244rd counting postseason play. ... The Nationals travel to Atlanta for Friday night's game, with LHP Ross Detwiler (3-3, 3.65) scheduled to face Tim Hudson (3-1, 3.03 ERA). ... Philadelphia heads to St. Louis for the first of four against the Cardinals, with RHP Joe Blanton (4-4, 3.74) scheduled to meet Jake Westbrook (4-3, 2.41).

More home improvement | Connie Smithsons Writing Place

The never ending home improvement bug has struck again. I?ve decided that I want to repaint the living room and leave one wall, so mirror tile can be put up. I?m not even going to try my had at this. I?m calling around for the professionals. I don?t want to get into the job of cutting glass, or dropping glass, hanging glass?none of it.

I?ve always wanted one wall of total mirrors though, that wasn?t a bathroom. I?ve been looking at various colors and styles and haven?t made a decision on what I want just yet. I?ve still got to pick out the colors I want to paint the living room. Then again, maybe I?ll pick the kind of mirror I love and then pick the paint. Which ever I do, I want this done right.

After the mirrored wall and new paint job, I?m gong to look for the perfect touches to go with both the antique furniture and the new furniture I plan on getting finally. I?m really looking forward to this renovation of sorts.

Scotland Yard deploys mobile fingerprint devices

(AP) ? Scotland Yard says it's equipping its police officers with handheld fingerprint devices, something the force says will help identify suspects in a matter of seconds.

Britain's largest force says it has distributed 350 of the cell phone-sized devices to officers across various parts of London, part of a nationwide rollout championed by Britain's National Policing Improvement Agency.

The force said Wednesday that the devices capture fingerprints and remotely check them against the police database, flagging wanted criminals in 30 seconds. Photographs of the devices released by police showed that they were manufactured by Pasadena, California-based biometrics company 3M Cogent, Inc.

Scotland Yard helped pioneer the field of fingerprint identification, setting up its Fingerprint Branch in 1901 and creating a classification system that was adopted by law enforcement agencies worldwide.
