OTB: Soccer player fined for opening beer

Punch line: ?Good thing they didn?t find the whiskey.?

OK, there was no whiskey. Domagoj Vida (pictured) was in enough trouble with the beer, as Croation soccer champions Dinamo Zagreb slapped the defender with a fine of 100,000 euros for opening a can of beer on the team bus while en route to a game. My euros-to-dollars smartphone app isn?t working, but I estimate that to be around $128,000 ? making this the most expensive can of beer in sports. If you don?t count those Budweiser bottles in the Super Bowl commercials, that is.

Coach Ante Cacic immediately ordered Vida, 23, to leave the bus, which left on Monday for a cup game against lower flight side NK Vrsar later on Tuesday.

?The Dinamo management has decided to punish Vida, a Croatia international with 14 caps, with a financial penalty of 100,000 euros for his behaviour,? the club, which have won the last seven Croatian championships, said on their website.

Reuters also gives us this sobering fact:

The average monthly salary in Croatia is around 750 euros.

Meanwhile during the last sporting event in which you participated, you were required to drink a beer each time you reached second base. Go figure.
