Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13 [Video]

Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13Kobe and LeBron's Olympic Squad Lose to 1992's Dream Team, Says NBA 2K13 If you got in on this summer's bar argument over which U.S. Olympic basketball team was better, and were convinced that the Dream Team could beat anything that walked the earth, including a team of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, then NBA 2K13 has good news for you.

The United States' 1992 Olympic basketball team of Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley prevailed over their 2012 counterparts, 133-126, in a simulation run on NBA 2K13, which releases on Tuesday. It was not a runaway victory, but the Dream Team held a lead for all but one brief instance in the second quarter.

This game was set for two computer-controlled teams to play each other, in full 12-minute quarters, on Hall-of-Fame difficulty (which governs computer-controlled players' behavior.)

2K Sports, at the urging of executive producer Jay-Z, reunited the entire 1992 Olympic team in a video game for the first time in 20 years, mostly to settle the argument Bryant started when he ventured that the 2012 Olympians would win.

Matchups, of course, are at the heart of this argument, and a really bad one in favor of the Dream Team made a huge difference. Chris Paul, paired off against Magic Johnson, just had no answer for a guy eight inches taller and a lot heavier. That's probably a big reason why Magic ended up as the player of the game, leading all scorers with 34 points on 15-of-17 shooting, while adding five rebounds and six assists.

I had some difficulty with video capture in the first quarter, which explains the dearth of highlights from it. Team USA 2012 took a 37-36 lead at 10:45 of the second quarter on a jumper by Russell Westbrook, which you can see above. It was the only lead Team USA 2012 had all game. Twice they got it to within 1 point, the latest with about 9 minutes to go in the third quarter, but the Dream Team had very little trouble scoring and forced Team USA 2012 to methodically attack the basket. They only got 14 points on the fast break. A 17-6 run in the fourth quarter still got Team USA 2012 no closer than 5.

Paul still distributed eight assists. Kevin Durant led the 2012 Olympians with 31 points, while James and Bryant each added 22. Carmelo Anthony had a respectable 16 points, six rebounds and two assists in 17 minutes of work, hitting all eight of his shots.

Jordan had 26 points on 12-for-22 shooting, with four assists, a steal and a block. Clyde Drexler picked up 16 points, 14 in the first half, before sitting most of the second. Larry Bird played more than he did when he was on this team in real life, as he suffered from back trouble for most of 1992 and was selected mostly in honor of his overall career. He logged 23 minutes in the game and hit all four of his shots, scoring nine points.

Barkley's 34 minutes were the second most of anyone on the Dream Team, and he came away with just six points and four rebounds, matched up against James for most of the evening. David Robinson had probably the game's best dunk, slipping off a screen through a completely vacated lane to throw down a thundering, two-handed, let-me-clear-my throat jam.

Jordan was right that the Dream Team's defense and shot blocking would likely prove the difference, but it wasn't by a wide margin. The Dream Team picked up five steals and four blocks, but Team USA 2012 still shot 62 percent and did a little bit better in rebounding, although having more misses gooses that stat. The teams attempted only seven three point shots combined.

One note: Neither team's lone collegian?Anthony Davis for 2012, Christian Laettner for the Dream Team?got into the game.

NBA 2K13 arrives in stores on Tuesday.

?Assessing fitness-to-practice of overseas-trained health practitioners by Australian registration & accreditation bodies (BMC Medical Education)? Tweet

Background: Assessment of fitness-to-practice of health professionals trained overseas and who wish to practice in Australia is undertaken by a range of organisations. These organisations conduct assessments using a range of methods. However there is very little published about how these organisations conduct their assessments. The purpose of the current paper is to investigate the methods of assessment used by these organisations and the issues associated with conducting these assessments. Methods: A series of semi-structured interviews was undertaken with a variety of organisations who undertake assessments of overseas-trained health professionals who wish to practice in Australia. Content analysis of the interviews was used to identify themes and patterns. Results: Four themes were generated from the content analysis of the interviews: (1) assessing; (2) process; (3) examiners; and (4) cost-efficiency. The themes were interconnected and each theme also had a number of sub-themes. Conclusions: The organisations who participated in the present study used a range of assessment methods to assess overseas trained health professionals. These organisations also highlighted a number of issues, particularly related to examiners and process issues, pre- and post-assessment. Organisations demonstrated an appreciation for ongoing review of their assessment processes and incorporating evidence from the literature to inform their processes and assessment development.

Car bomb kills 4 in eastern Syria

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? A suicide attacker in a parked car blew himself up in an area housing security offices in northeastern Syria on Sunday, killing at least four people, state media said.

Syrian state television and the country's official news agency also said scores were wounded in the mid-afternoon blast in Qamishli, 700 kilometers (435 miles) from the capital, Damascus. The agency said the explosion, which also damaged nearby buildings, was carried out by a "terrorist suicide bomber."

Activists put the death toll at eight and said it was expected to rise because 15 people sustained "serious wounds." The blast targeted a police station in the city, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

An amateur video posted online by opposition activists showed a column of white smoke rising between buildings in Qamishli.

The explosion came hours after activists said fighting between Syrian rebels and government forces killed at least five people in the embattled northern city of Aleppo. The dead included a man who has been shot by a sniper near the city's medieval citadel. Several homes were also destroyed in the violence, it said.

The country's commercial capital and largest city, Aleppo is home to some 3 million people and was once a bastion of support for President Bashar Assad. But the city has been hit by fierce fighting since rebels launched an offensive there in July.

The news agency said Assad's troops have carried out a "successful operation" in western Aleppo against "terrorist gatherings" ? a reference to the fighting trying to topple the regime. SANA said several rebels had been killed or wounded in the violence, but gave no other details.

On Saturday, a fire sparked by battles between Assad's troops and rebels tore through Aleppo's centuries-old covered market, one of the best-preserved bazaars in the Middle East. It was the worst blow yet to the city's historic center and to a UNESCO World Heritage site in Syria.

The heightened violence in Aleppo drew criticism from the city's industrialists of "insufficient" government protection provided to factories and other businesses in the area.

Fares al-Shihabi, head of Aleppo's Chamber of Industry, told Syria's pro-government al-Watan daily that several previous calls on the government for increased protection against "daily armed attacks" on industrial estates "have gone unanswered."

In response, the chamber was forced to hire guards around-the-clock to protect the businesses against attacks by looters, he added.

Rami Martini, chief of Aleppo's Chamber of Tourism, warned of the vulnerability of tourist sites in the area. He told al-Watan that the violence in Aleppo has "dealt a blow in every sense of the word" to the country's tourism sector.

The Aleppo market, a major tourist attraction with its narrow stone alleys and stores selling perfume, fabrics and spices, had been the site of occasional gun battles and shelling for weeks. But amateur video posted Saturday showed wall-to-wall flames engulfing wooden doors as burning debris fell away from the storefronts. Activists said hundreds of shops were affected.

The souk is one of a half-dozen renowned cultural sites in Syria that have become collateral damage in the civil war.

The rebels launched a renewed offensive on Aleppo last week, sparking intense fighting in the city.

An amateur video posted by activists Sunday showed night fighting in Aleppo.

"We want to liberate the city from these shabiha," a man says in the background, referring to Syria's pro-Assad militiamen. In the video, what appears to be a rebel fighter fires projectiles from the cover of a hillside to the shouts of "God is Great" from others nearby.

Another video showed Syrian warplanes flying over Aleppo and heavy smoke rising from the city's skyline.

Syria imposes tight restrictions on foreign reporters and the authenticity of these videos could not be verified independently.

Also Sunday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Syria's allies to stop backing the Assad regime. "We call on Russia, China and Iran, please review your stance," Erdogan told a conference of his ruling Justice and Development Party.

"History will not forgive those who stand together with cruel regimes," Erdogan said.

Turkey once had close ties with Damascus, but since the Syrian uprising began Ankara has emerged as one of the strongest foreign backers of the Syrian opposition. Turkey has given shelter to tens of thousands of Syrian refugees and Turkish soil has served as a crucial logistical center for rebel fighters since they captured several Syrian border crossings with Turkey over the summer.

Question by Merios: What?s wrong with me?
I have headaches almost daily. Sometimes it skips a day or two, but never goes beyond two days. It?s been happening all my life, ever since I was a child. (I?m 18 now, turning 19 in July if it?s of any concern)

I have taken all kinds of medication for it and tried different types to see if they would do any better, but all I?ve found that works is Excedrin Migraine tablets. The thing is, I know what a migraine is and I know what a headache is- they?re actually quite different..

It?s strange, but it seems like my headaches are powerful enough to only be quelled by medicine strong enough to take out a migraine.

I?ve had CT?s and such (been to the hospital a few times because some got out of control when medicine wouldn?t work) and none of them showed anything wrong with me.

I?ve been looking into Rebound Headaches, which come from what I believe and read to have been brought on by medicine taking away a headache and then become ineffective because my body is too used to it.

Sometimes my headaches get to the point of making me dizzy and nauseous.

I am on my computer a lot, as well as watching my television a lot. I?m really not too active, but I?ve seen other kids who are much more out of shape and much more complacent than I am who don?t suffer from the crap I?m put through.

Any tips?

MIAC Football: Bethel outlasts Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS - Three kick returns for 141 yards and clutch defensive stops proved to be pivotal for the Royals Saturday, as Bethel spoiled Augsburg?s homecoming celebration with a 21-20 victory over the Auggies. What was slated as the Star Tribune game of the week proved to be just that as Auggies scored a touchdown with 1:46 remaining in the fourth quarter to make the score 21-20 in favor of the Royals. Instead of kicking the extra point, Augsburg attempted a two-point conversion that was broken up - which decided the game in the end.

BU got on the board early with an electric kick return by Brandon Marquardt (So., Champlin, Minn.), who was coming off an ankle injury a week ago. Marquardt returned the opening kickoff 61 yards to the Augsburg 25-yard-line before Erik Peterson (So., Orono, Minn.) & Co. went eight plays for the Royals? first touchdown. Peterson ended the drive with a one-yard score with 12:11 remaining in the quarter.

Augsburg responded with an 11-play, 63-yard drive later in the period that ended in an Ayrton Scott touchdown pass to Tyler Swanson, which made the game knotted at seven apiece. Scott and Swanson connected again in the second quarter on a five-yard pass that gave the Auggies its first lead of the game with 8:18 to go in the second quarter.

The Royals welcomed the ensuing kickoff nicely, though, as Mitch Hallstrom (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) scampered for his own 61-yard kickoff return that put Bethel in threatening position again. Bethel took advantage of great field position by putting together a seven-play, 28-yard touchdown drive before the end of the first half that evened the game again at 14.

Following the intermission, BU held Augsburg in its opening drive before scoring the go-ahead touchdown on a nine-play, 44-yard drive lasting 2:43. In the series, Marquardt and Marshall Klitzke (Fr., Annandale, Minn.) rushed for a combined 37 yards in three carries before Erik Peterson ran in his third touchdown of the day - all inside the two-yard-line.

Bethel displayed why it is a Top 10 defense in the country in the second half, as the Royals held Augsburg scoreless until the last minute of the game. Seth Mathis (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) intercepted two Ayrton Scott passes, while J.D. Mehlhorn (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) nabbed another. BU hadn?t had a player pick off two passes in one game since 2011 against St. John?s in week five.

The Auggies remained competitive, however, keeping the Royals scoreless throughout the remainder of the second half and setting themselves up for a score with 1:46 to play. Yet a failed two-point conversion, a BU recovery on the subsequent onside kick, and Mehlhorn?s interception in the final seconds sealed Augsburg fate and awarded Bethel with the victory.

Erik Peterson finished the day with all three scores for the Royals and ended 7-for-14 with 49 yards passing. Peterson?s three-touchdown game was the second consecutive three-score game by a BU player.

Marshall Klitzke led Bethel on the ground with 54 yards on 11 carries, followed by Brandon Marquardt, who managed 30 yards on six touches. As a team, Bethel did not turn the ball over once and capitalized on three Auggie turnovers. Today?s game was only the second time BU hasn?t recorded a turnover since the 2010 season.

Defensively, the Royals held Augsburg?s quarterback Ayrton Scott - two-time MIAC offensive player of the week - to 350 total yards. Scott has been averaging well over 400 yards throughout the entire 2012 season. Mathis ended the day with 15 tackles, while Trent Duppenthaler (So., Sherwood, Ore.) ended with 11 wrap-ups. Erik Smith (Sr., Henning, Minn.) and Brett Skoog (Sr., Long Lake, Minn.) were well in the mix as well, as both finished with nine tackles with at least one for loss.

Other notables include a perfect day for Nathaniel Van Loon (Fr., Faribault, Minn.), who has been nearly flawless kicking extra points thus far this season.

Bethel?s road continues this week, as the Royals face Concordia-Moorhead in a Homecoming game on campus. Saturday?s game against the Cobbers will be the third straight game BU plays an undefeated opponent, as CC is coming off a bye and a 31-21 win over Saint John?s.

170 Scientific Reasons to Lose the Soy in Your Diet

With all the loads of scientific data available that soy is not a healthy part of anyone?s diet, it shocks me how many folks are still on the ?soy is good for you? bandwagon ? even folks who should know better like your doctor!

I just got an email from a reader the other day who had been to multiple doctors, both holistic and conventional, and all but one of them were telling her that plenty of soy in her diet would help her menopause symptoms.

Be careful folks. ?It?s dangerous out there! ?You really need to do your research and be on your toes at all times when it comes to nutritional advice even from someone in a white coat!

For those of you who just sat down because you are so taken aback by the notion that soy is not actually the healthfood you thought it was, here are 170 scientific reasons to back up this assertion.

Please note that fermented soy in small, condimental amounts as practiced in traditional Asian cultures is fine for those who have healthy thyroid function. ?Only miso, tempeh, and natto fall under this category. ?In addition, if you want to sprinkle a few edamame on your salad or have a few small cubes of tofu in your miso soup from time to time, that is fine too. ? Just don?t make it a regular part of your diet!

If you have any sort of thyroid issues going on, however, it is really the best policy to avoid all soy all the time as soy is a potent goitrogen (thyroid suppressor) even if fermented.

Soy Wake Up Call #1

A 1991 study found that?eating only 2 TBL/day of roasted and pickled soybeans for 3 months?to healthy adults who were receiving adequate iodine in their diet caused?thyroid suppression?with symptoms of malaise, constipation, sleepiness, and goiters?(Nippon Naibunpi Gakkai Zasshi?1991, 767: 622-629)!

Still think munching on edamame instead of popcorn is a healthy habit?

Soy Wake Up Call #2

Six premenopausal women with normal menstrual cycles were given 45 mg of soy isoflavones per day. ?This is equivalent to only 1-2 cups of soy milk or 1/2 cup of soy flour! ??After only one month, all of the women experienced delayed menstruation with the effects similar to tamoxifen, the anti-estrogen drug given to women with breast cancer (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition?1994?Sep;60(3):333-340).

Soy Wake Up Call #3

Dietary estrogens in the form of?soy foods were found to have the potential to disrupt the endocrine system?with the effects in women similar to taking the breast cancer drug tamoxifen (Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine?1995 Jan;208(1):51-9).

Soy Wake Up Call #4

Estrogens consumed in the diet at low concentrations were found to stimulate breast cells much like DDT to increase enzymatic activity which leads to breast cancer (Environmental Health Perspectives?1997 Apr;105 (Suppl 3):633-636).

Soy Wake Up Call #5

The soy isoflavones genistein and daidzein appear to stimulate existing breast cancer growth indicating risk in consuming soy products if a woman has breast cancer. (Annals of Pharmacotherapy?2001 Sep;35(9):118-21).

Soy Wake Up Call #6

Direct evidence that soy isoflavones genistein and daidzein suppress the pituitary-thyroid axis in middle-aged rats fed 10 mg soy isoflavones per kilo after only 3 weeks as compared with rats eating regular rat chow (Experimental Biology and Medicine?2010 May;235(5):590-8).

Soy Wake Up Call #7

Don?t eat soy when you are pregnant ladies! ?Scientific research has shown that the developing male fetus which is exposed to soy phytoestrogens may suffer from higher susceptibility to prostate cancer later in life (Prostate?1994;24(2):67-78).

Soy Wake Up Call #8

Keep that soy away from your daughters! ? Dietary genistein (soy phytoestrogen) in developing female rats had the effect of?significantly accelerated puberty (Toxicol Sci?1999 Oct;51(2):236-44).

Soy Wake Up Call #9

Hey guys! Soy protein powder strips your masculinity! ?A study of 12 men aged 18 years and older experienced a 19% drop in serum testosterone in only 28 days when supplemented with 56 grams of soy protein powder over that same time period (Prev?2007;16:829?33).

Soy Wake Up Call #10

Do NOT feed soy formula to your babies! ?Female newborns who are orally exposed to genisin, the glycosylated form of genistein (soy phytoestrogen) experienced harm to the reproductive system in the form of??delayed vaginal opening? abnormal estrous cycles, decreased fertility, and delayed parturition.? (Environmental Health Perspective?2009 Dec;117(12):1883-9).

Convinced yet? ? I don?t know about you, but ten reasons is plenty for me! ? Still interested to see the remaining 160 reasons? ?My friend Dr. Kaayla Daniel, author of the must read? The Whole Soy Story, has compiled the rest of the list for you if you click here.

New Report Shows Assisted Living More Affordable Than Skilled ...

According to a new report, the median cost of a room in an assisted living community is less than half the median cost of a private room in a skilled nursing facility. The cost disparity has increased since last year, with skilled nursing costs inflating at a higher rate than assisted living costs.

Genworth Financial released its annual report analyzing long-term care costs across the nation and revealed that the median annual rate for a resident of an assisted living community is $39,600. The rate for a private room at a skilled nursing facility under the same consideration, is $81,030. The rate for a semi-private room is $73,000. This disparity has grown since last year, increasing 4.23 percent for a private room at a skilled nursing facility, and a 3.36 percent increase for a semi-private room at a skilled nursing facility over the same period.

A state-by-state survey revealed that Alaska has the highest private room skilled nursing costs and Oklahoma, the lowest. Read the full report to learn about your state?s long term care costs and nationwide statistics.

(AP) ? Tyler Giuliano had no trouble with the law. The teenager loved flying small planes as a Civil Air Patrol cadet and seemed happy as he played an online game with friends Wednesday night. But hours later, authorities say, Tyler was outside wearing a black ski mask and wielding a knife when he was shot by his father, who thought he was a prowler.

No immediate charges were brought against Jeffrey Giuliano, a popular fifth-grade teacher, in the slaying of 15-year-old Tyler, who was gunned down in his aunt's driveway next door to his own home in New Fairfield around 1 a.m. Thursday.

"It's something out of a Hollywood script," said John Hodge, the first selectman, or top elected official, in the town of nearly 14,000 people about 50 miles from New York City. He said he couldn't recall another killing in his eight years on the job.

State police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said the boy had never been in trouble with the law, and some of those who knew him described him as a good kid with an easygoing personality. Investigators and acquaintances said they were at a loss to explain what he was doing outside dressed all in black and carrying a weapon.

"Certainly, that is the major question we are trying to answer at this point," Vance said.

State police said the shooting happened after Jeffrey Giuliano got a call from his sister next door saying that someone might be trying to break into her home in their neighborhood of attractive colonial-style houses. Giuliano grabbed a handgun and went outside to investigate, troopers said.

He confronted someone in a ski mask and opened fire when the person came at him with something shiny in his hand, police said.

When police officers arrived, Tyler was lying dead in the driveway with a knife in his hand, and his father, in a T-shirt and shorts, was sitting on the grass. Detectives informed the elder Giuliano several hours later that he had shot his son, Vance said.

"All in all, it's a tragedy," Vance said.

Police were investigating whether the father's gun was registered.

No one answered the door at Giuliano's home or his sister's.

Tyler was a student at New Fairfield High School and a Civil Air Patrol cadet. Some of those who knew him said he enjoyed spending time with his family and flying gliders and small planes. He was adopted by Giuliano and his wife a few years ago, friends said.

One classmate said many students were baffled by what happened.

"I just thought it was so weird when I heard because I knew Tyler, not very well, but he was just a sweet person and he always made everyone laugh. I met him in the chorus room, actually, and he just wasn't the type to do what happened," said Erin Pallas, 16. "So it didn't make sense to us. It doesn't make sense to the student body."

Brett Rasile, a 14-year-old friend, said he and Tyler were playing an online game called Minecraft while talking and laughing together via Skype until about 10 p.m. Wednesday, when Tyler said he had to go to bed. Brett said Tyler wasn't in any trouble that he knew of, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

"Same old Tyler. He was perfectly fine," Brett said. "He didn't really leave any evidence, any hints towards what he would do."

Alicia Roy, New Fairfield superintendent of schools, said the elder Giuliano grew up in the town, holds summer music and zoology camps for his students and plays guitar in a local rock band that raises money for charity. He is affectionately known as "Mr. G" around Meeting House Hill School.

"He was the teacher you requested in the fifth grade. He was a great teacher. All the kids loved him," said Rosemary Rasile, Brett's mother.

Brian Wyckoff, 17, said Mr. G "was always walking around with a smile on his face. He always says hi to everyone."

The high school stayed open late to provide grief counseling for students and parents.

"The community is deeply saddened, and our hearts go out to all the family members," Roy said.

A Suicide Gone Viral

Shepard Smith of Fox News

Shepard Smith of Fox News. Smith apologized Friday after Fox News aired a live car chase in which the suspect committed suicide.

Live coverage of a car chase on Fox News turned into a grisly spectacle Friday afternoon when the suspect got out of his car, stumbled down a hillside, pulled a gun, and shot himself in the head. As the scene unfolded, Fox News anchor Shepard Smith grew increasingly apprehensive, then yelled ?get off it, get off it!?, belatedly urging the show?s producers to stop the live feed as it became obvious the man was going to do something rash. The station cut awkwardly to a commercial just after showing his death.

After Fox aired the on-air suicide, Smith apologized to viewers, saying, ?We really messed up.? Another news outfit, though, seemed less tortured about its decision to publicize the snuff film. BuzzFeed immediately posted the footage on YouTube, where it garnered more than 1,000 ?likes? in under an hour. ?Here?s the video of that car chase suicide aired by Fox News,? tweeted Dorsey Shaw, who makes videos and gifs for Buzzfeed. BuzzFeed?s official account quickly retweeted it, and it began to make the rounds. (And to be fair, it wasn?t just BuzzFeed. Gawker subsequently posted the video on its site as well, as did the blog Mediaite, and the Drudge Report initially linked to BuzzFeed?s post, though it soon changed its top link to Smith?s apology.)

The site?s decision to post and share the clip sparked immediate blowback. ?Why is Buzzfeed sharing a suicide video? C?mon guys,? tweeted Reuters social media editor Anthony De Rosa. The Columbia Journalism Review chimed in, tweeting, ?Who's worse? @FoxNews for airing the suicide, or @BuzzFeed for re-posting the video just in case you missed it the first time?? Andrew Kaczynski, a BuzzFeed political reporter, fired back: ?@CJR I prefer your whiny usually incorrect long form analysis pieces over your instant judgement.?

Others, including Slate?s own Farhad Manjoo, defended the site. ?I'm with @BuzzFeed. People are talking about a thing on Twitter. Posting stuff people are talking about is what BF does. This is their job,? Manjoo tweeted.

I?m not linking to the video here, which betrays my own views as to whether it?s right to broadcast footage of a non-public figure committing suicide. Research suggests that graphic depictions of suicide in the media can spur copycat suicides, especially among young people, and the World Health Organization?s guidelines warn against sensationalizing it. Virtually everyone who has studied it agrees that, at a minimum, suicides should be covered with a modicum of sensitivity and context. BuzzFeed exhibited neither.

120928_TECH_buzzFeed

A still from the BuzzFeed video uploaded to YouTube of a car chase that Fox News aired live Friday, in which the suspect killed himsellf.

And to Manjoo?s tweet that it?s BuzzFeed?s job to post stuff that people are talking about, I replied, ?So if people are talking about child porn? ?? He responded that of course you have to use some judgment, ?but this was a news event, I think.? (He also pointed out that the video might violate YouTube?s community guidelines, which say, ?If your video shows someone being physically hurt, attacked, or humiliated, don't post it.?)

I emailed Ashley McCollum, BuzzFeed?s press manager, and she said essentially the same thing as Manjoo. Her statement:

Making an editorial decision on how to cover a sensitive, tragic news event like this is never an easy one. But it is, indeed, a news event and we are a news organization. We posted both an edited version and the full version and we respect our readers' judgment.

Gawker?s Hamilton Nolan penned a similar defense, calling his site?s decision to post the video ?ethical,? because ?it is news.?

Of course it?s news that Fox News accidentally aired the video. And you can make a good case that Fox was inviting this type of debacle with its habit of airing live car-chase feeds. But Fox couldn?t have known that it was about to air a suicide. BuzzFeed, by contrast, knew exactly what it was doing. By posting the clip on YouTube (and on its own site) and tweeting it out for the world to see, it ensured that footage of a man killing himself would reach orders of magnitude more people than it would have otherwise. That might be good business for BuzzFeed, but it?s hard to see the benefit for anyone else.

OTB: Soccer player fined for opening beer

Punch line: ?Good thing they didn?t find the whiskey.?

OK, there was no whiskey. Domagoj Vida (pictured) was in enough trouble with the beer, as Croation soccer champions Dinamo Zagreb slapped the defender with a fine of 100,000 euros for opening a can of beer on the team bus while en route to a game. My euros-to-dollars smartphone app isn?t working, but I estimate that to be around $128,000 ? making this the most expensive can of beer in sports. If you don?t count those Budweiser bottles in the Super Bowl commercials, that is.

Coach Ante Cacic immediately ordered Vida, 23, to leave the bus, which left on Monday for a cup game against lower flight side NK Vrsar later on Tuesday.

?The Dinamo management has decided to punish Vida, a Croatia international with 14 caps, with a financial penalty of 100,000 euros for his behaviour,? the club, which have won the last seven Croatian championships, said on their website.

Reuters also gives us this sobering fact:

The average monthly salary in Croatia is around 750 euros.

Meanwhile during the last sporting event in which you participated, you were required to drink a beer each time you reached second base. Go figure.

(AP Photo/San Francisco Chronicle, Michael Macor)

(AP) ? The Department of Homeland Security is planning to issue a policy memo stating that illegal immigrants with American same-sex partners are eligible to have their deportations put on hold under a federal program designed to focus resources away from low-priority cases.

The move had been sought by gay rights activists and their allies in Congress before Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced plans for the policy Thursday in a letter to 84 Democratic lawmakers.

"It will mark the very first time that lesbian and gay couples have been recognized within immigration policy for relief," said Steve Ralls, the spokesman for Immigration Equality, an advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender immigrants.

The Democratic lawmakers addressed in Napolitano's letter pressed the agency to inform Immigration and Customs Enforcement field offices that bi-national gay couples in long-term relationships have family ties that should be considered as grounds for deferring a foreign citizen's removal from the U.S.

"I have directed ICE to disseminate written guidance to the field that the interpretation of the phrase 'family relationships' includes long-term, same-sex partners," Napolitano wrote, adding that the decision to grant reprieves still would be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The instructions do not mean that foreigners who are married to Americans of the same sex will be eligible for green cards or citizenship, as are immigrants with opposite sex spouses. The Obama administration is continuing to enforce a 1996 law that prohibits the government from recognizing same-sex marriages, even as it opposes it in court and takes gay relationships into account when evaluating deportation cases.

The Williams Institute, a think tank, estimates that as of 2010 there were about 29,000 same-sex couples nationwide comprised of a U.S citizen and a citizen of another country.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington group that advocates tighter immigration policies, said that even though the administration says it is complying with the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act by not allowing citizens to sponsor same-sex spouses for green cards, the pending guidance for ICE officials to review the family ties of same-sex couples suggests otherwise.

"It's a camel's nose under the tent," Krikorian said. "If you get same-sex couples approved in terms of immigration, you can use that as an incremental approach to getting changes in other areas, such as in tax policy."

The policy guidance expected to go out next week will reference a memo ICE Director John Morton issued last year advising the agency's officers and lawyers to review pending deportation cases to determine which ones should be top priority and which ones might be shelved, Napolitano said.

Government attorneys weigh factors such as a person's criminal record, family ties and community relations in making their decisions.

ICE officials said at the time that long-term same-sex relationships could be included under the family ties criteria, but advocates and House Democrats led by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wanted that determination put into writing.

Lufthansa: savings won't have desired effect in 2012

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Deutsche Lufthansa's efforts to cut costs will be thwarted by higher fuel prices and a weak economy this year, the chief executive of Germany's leading airline said.

The company launched a savings program - dubbed SCORE - earlier this year to boost annual earnings by 1.5 billion euros ($1.9 billion) by the end 2014, compared with 2011.

"Due to the headwinds we face, the progress we have made is not visibly reflected, as we had hoped, in our financial result," Christoph Franz said in an employee newsletter on Friday.

The airline - whose business is caught between low-cost rivals such as easyJet in Europe and Gulf carriers such as Emirates in the premium long-haul market - has said it has identified more than 1 billion euros in potential cutbacks in its passenger airline business alone.

It announced this month that it will merge its European and German domestic routes under a new low-cost brand.

While SCORE will reach its target this year, Franz said high jet fuel prices and the weak economy, as well as fees and costs for materials, were mitigating its effects.

"Therefore we have to work harder to achieve SCORE's planned earnings improvement of 1.5 billion euros in the end," he said.

Shares of Lufthansa turned negative on the news and were down 1.4 percent at 10.59 euros by 1113 GMT. The DAX index <.gdaxi> of leading German stocks was down 0.4 percent.

The airline is negotiating with labor representatives of cabin crew, who held a series of rolling strikes several weeks ago, resulting in the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights.

The flagship model for Sony for this year is the Xperia T. However the company has responded well and backed it up with a budget Smartphone that will surely raise lots of eyebrows. The Sony Xperia J is well on its way to becoming one of the most successful phones from the house of Sony. The reasons are quite simple with loads of features and a stunning screen means that the Smartphone stands for itself. As far as the design and curves are concerned, Sony is spot on. The phone fits into the hand exceptionally well all thanks to the rubber back of the phone. If you are a fan of solid body built, then the Xperia J will not disappoint you at all. A close look at the Xperia T would reveal that the Xperia J is largely based on the design of Xperia T but of course has lots of variations. For an instance the Xpera J allows you to open up the back cover and have access to the sim card slot along with the micro SD card slot.

Sony made sure that the Xperia J is not shy of features so that people consider it to be good value for their money. That is the very reason this Smartphone comes with a 1GHz single core processor which is good enough to carry out most of the operations and application without any issues. The phone also comes with a 512Mb RAM which is again good enough but not the best. But then it is supposed to be a budget phone, so one cannot expect to have all the best features stuffed inside it. However the 4-inch FWVGA screen is the highlight of the phone. The screen is large and bright and the 480 x 854 resolution makes sure pictures and videos are rich with colors and sharp as well. The phone features Android Ice Cream Sandwichh, the latest os available under the Android banner.

The phone has a 5Mp camera along with LED flash so that you can take pictures anywhere. However the camera application does take couple of seconds to start up. Presence of a secondary camera in front ensures it can be used for 3G with ease. The battery back-up of Xperia J is pretty decent as well. If you are looking for a good looking and decent performing Smartphone that is affordable, Xperia J might be a good choice.

Gramophone Awards 2012 to pianist Murray Perahia, conductor ...

Gramphone magazine's prestigious recordings awards include honors for pianist Murray Perahia and conductor Claudio Abbado. Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja was named Artist of the Yearand 20-year-old pianist Benjamin Grosvenor was named Young Artist of the Year.?
Perahia wins in a new category: the "Piano Award." And in choosing Abbado's recording of "Fidelio," critic Richard Osborne writes:
"The revised dialogue provided by stage director Tatjana G?rbaca is not without controversy. In Act 1, her cuts and rewrites remove all hint of domesticity and private affection; in Act 2, she omits just about everything. The result is Beethoven?s lofty Singspiel recast as musical meta-theatre. Happily, the cast is as fine as any that might be assembled today and Abbado himself conducts a performance the like of which we have not heard since the time of Furtw?ngler. It is a no-frills yet at the same time deeply expressive reading which goes like a bolted arrow directly to the heart of the matter. If Fidelio speaks as no other opera does of the miraculous resilience of the human spirit, Claudio Abbado?s late re-creation of it serves only to compound that miracle."

Being Rude Online - Business Insider

Between the seemingly endless comment trolling and tweeting of what you had for lunch, it might be time to take a step back and reconsider what you share online.

Daniel Post Senning is the spokesperson for The Emily Post Institute, which exists to provide etiquette advice and workshops to corporations and news outlets. He's the co-author of the 18th edition of Emily Post's Etiquette and has a book on social media etiquette due out next year.

We picked his brain on the state of etiquette and the Internet earlier this morning. Here's what he had to say.

Internet trolls often feel protected by anonymity. But I think it's superficial anonymity?what you do online is always potentially public and permanent. There's always someone who has one deeper level of technical expertise than you and can follow you online.

Don't be seduced by the illusion of privacy. We're used to a certain degree of privacy in our homes, cars, or offices. But the second you go online, the Internet is potentially the most public place in your life. You can be someone talking loudly on the phone, unaware of the public around them.

Trolling is atrocious behavior and we assume people are just looking for attention. Your best solution is to not give it to them and to not give them a reason to come out from under the bridge in the first place.

Every new generation has a period of figuring out best practice for new communication tools. We've seen it before, from the first telephones, to home phones, to cell phones, and now social media.

The fundamental issue is that these are relationship issues?they are most important in terms of how they affect relationships. Ask yourself how you're using these tools to serve your human relationships. Take your cell phone as an example?it's neither rude nor polite on its own. It's how you use it.

If you want a golden rule, don't anything you wouldn't do walking down the main street of your hometown and don't post anything you wouldn't put on the bulletin board of your grocery store. Imagine yourself in a context where there's more accountability for what you say and do.

Yesterday's lab installment gave us an opportunity to pit the Lumia 920 against competing smartphones in a low-light capture scenario, but Nokia's standard battery of tests is used to evaluate and improve far more than stills shooting. Several stops throughout the day brought us to a foam-filled sound chamber tasked with analyzing call quality in a variety of environments, a room with industrial freezers and ovens used to push the limits of operability, and a rig that can shoot with interchangeable sensors and apply image quality algorithms in real-time, without a handset in sight. Unfortunately, due to proprietary technologies and processes, we weren't permitted to photograph these first facilities, though we did manage to snap away at two other stations -- a platform that shifted up and down at adjustable speeds to test the Lumia 920's optical image stabilization, and a machine that drops smartphones against a block of concrete, used to simulate that all-too-frequent occurrence of handsets plunging towards pavement.

We've seen plenty examples of the 920's OIS capabilities this week, so we won't go into much more detail on that front, but specialized (and pricey) equipment enables engineers to introduce consistent processes -- this machine simulated hand shake at different speeds, and even with exaggerated movement, the benefits were clear. A separate building contained the drop test contraption, which releases devices from an adjustable height, letting them land directly on a block of polished concrete. We tested both the 808 PureView and a Samsung Galaxy S III in this manner (with roughly 100 Lumia prototypes currently available, Nokia wasn't quite willing to risk sending one to its death). Both smartphones remained in perfect working order following the drop, so it's likely that they'll be able to handle a similar fall during regular use as well (company reps offered to test our iPhone 5, but we declined handing it over). That wraps up our week at Nokia's facilities in Finland -- there will be plenty more to explore once we have a Lumia sample in hand, but you'll find the OIS test and concrete plunge videos ready right now, posted just after the break.
