News | New Treatment for Severe Asthma | Lehigh Valley Health ...

August 2nd, 2012 by Brian Downs

It?s an all too familiar scenario for many chronic asthma sufferers. They go to different doctors and try different medications and treatments, but continue to have trouble breathing even to the point of struggling to walk. Sometimes the condition becomes so severe it requires admission to the hospital. There is now help for these patients who are 18 or older at Lehigh Valley Health Network with a procedure very few hospitals currently provide called bronchial thermoplasty. WFMZ-TV 69 News recently reported on the treatment in which a flexible instrument is inserted through the patient?s mouth and down into the air passages.? A catheter is inserted that delivers a thermal energy pulse which thins the muscle to help the patient breathe easier. Robert Kruklitis, MD, the health network?s chief of pulmonary medicine, says research shows an 84 percent reduction in ER visits and 32 percent fewer asthma attacks.
