Friends Don't Let Friends Fat-Talk! | ED Recovery

Emphasizing a ban on criticizing both one?s own body and the bodies of others, this year?s slogan for national Fat Talk Free Week was, ?Friends don?t let friends fat talk!? ?Either I am easily excited, or the tagline is pure genius. Either way, it?s a simple, straight-forward message, applicable even for the youngest of people.

Children and body image trends

Eating and body image disorders are far too complex to pinpoint a sole cause. However, I firmly believe our cultural disdain for ?fat? or ?heavy? people coupled with an overvalued desire for thinness contribute to the self-rejection that occurs within the psyche of those suffering with disordered eating. Popularly referred to as ?fat-talk,? negative and pejorative messages about food, size, weight, and shape undeniably add a layer of complication to the eating disorders equation.

About 50% of 11-13 year old girls consider themselves overweight, with 80% admitting to weight loss attempts by age 13. (Keep in mind these are developing children who are engaged in a fight against their very nature to grow!) These attitudes do not arise out of thin air, and they were likely formulating long before they were outwardly expressed. Even elementary students are extremely impressionable and attentive to cultural ideals regarding body image. With upwards of 42% of 1^st ? 3^rd graders wanting to be thinner and 80% of 10 year olds terrified of becoming fat, I see the body dissatisfaction phenomenon as an undeniable epidemic.

A study conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality revealed that between 1999 and 2006 hospitalizations for eating disorders in children under 12 increased by 119%. In response, there is a growing demand for eating disorder programs that cater to the special needs of young children and adolescents?(learn more about Mirasol Teen, our integrative program for adolescents).

Internalizing messages of beauty, health, fashion, and fitness from family, peers, and the media, these sensitive souls are keen observers of the world unfolding around them. Ridicule and rejection are noted, sorted, and filed away for future consideration. Even witnessing an act of such bullying can be enough to convince a child to alter behavior in effort to avoid becoming the next victim.

Fat-Talk Trauma

Sticks and stones will break my bones

??is one of childhood?s most misleading nursery rhymes! Most of us have felt the pain of words becoming piercing weapons at some point along the way. Yet, there really is little rhyme or reason to what sticks and what stones.

Ouch!

??You are eating me out of house and home.? ? Directed to a 10 year old by an extended family member

?Do you really think you should be eating that?? ? Directed to a 14 year old by her father who did not think she needed dessert.

?That lady is disgusting. I can?t believe she?s drinking soda.? ? Expressed by a weight-concerned mother and overheard by her 8 year old, already body conscious, daughter.

?Your jeans are so tight they?re practically painted on?? ? Communicated friend to friend, age 13.

Unfortunately, it does not take much for words to do great damage. Most of the time, there is little premeditative thought put into fat-talk. While it may quickly spill off the tongue, the ramifications can linger for years. I just watched an interview on the Rachel Ray show today featuring anti-bullying spokeswoman, Demi Lovato, who shared that her peers called her fat when she was just 12. She pinpointed this bullying to the beginning of her struggles with self-harm, eating disorders, and depression.

My Fat Talk Battle

I still find myself engaging in fat talk internally more than I would like to admit. With discipline and practice, I am aided by an ever improving fat-talk filter. In a moment of insecurity, my human imperfection becomes apparent when fat talk slips from my very mouth. Every time I wish I was tongue-tied!

There are several multi-million dollar industries that thrive off of our insecurities. In a ladder climbing society, we are naturally sold on the need to improve.

We have available a pill, plan, or product to better almost everyTHING.

As has been said before, good enough is nearly an inconceivable notion.

Because I am painfully aware of the harm a few thoughtless or misplaced words can evoke, I am reprogramming, redefining, and recreating as I navigate each corner of recovery. The hope is I reduce my footprint and leave no trace behind [of my own body image baggage] for the benefit of future generations.

Ideas to Combat Fat-Talk

Society is often written and referred to as something outside of ourselves. However, we all play a critical, collective role in the development of the social environment we share.

The first step in combatting self-talk is to start with ourselves. Pledge to become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors around food, fitness, body image, and self-concept. With increased awareness, you will slowly begin to think before you speak. Once you begin to master the challenge of silencing the negativity, you can begin to restructure or challenge any remaining thoughts that may continue to privately rummage through your mind. Without judgment, acknowledge when you are ?fat-thinking? and add a bit of compassion so you can observe the mind doing what it does best, which is to think. We don?t have to believe everything we think and we certainly do not have to act on it. If you are really committed to this new discipline, you can begin repeating mantra?s and affirmations to counter undesired thoughts.

When you are in the presence of young and impressionable people, attempt to role model what you wish had been role modeled to you. Not only will you feel fulfilled as you make a positive contribution to another life, you may also find yourself healing lingering wounds from your own childhood experiences with fat-talk trauma.

Sandy forces New York law firms to work remotely

(Reuters) - With Hurricane Sandy bearing down on New York, law firms on Monday scrambled to keep operations running normally, with attorneys working remotely via BlackBerry and computer, and skeletal crews manning offices in midtown Manhattan.

Law firms such as Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy and Cahill, Gordon & Reindel shuttered their offices because they are in or near the high risk financial-district areas evacuated by the city. Dozens of other firms outside the high risk areas, including Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, took similar precautions.

Firms had various plans to keep their employees informed of developments. Cadwalader, located at One World Financial Center, provided its attorneys with updates about technology safeguards and backup systems via email and an emergency telephone hotline, according to a spokesman.

Telephone calls and faxes to New York were re-routed to the firm's office in Charlotte, North Carolina. Cadwalader also used a meeting space in midtown Manhattan to accommodate about 50 lawyers and support staff who were able to make it to work.

Jonathan Schaffzin, an executive committee member and corporate partner at Cahill Gordon, said that with attorneys working remotely, the storm's effect had been minimal as of Monday morning. But the firm's ability to continue to conduct business would depend on factors beyond its control, such as whether courts or client offices were open, or whether the power went out at a particular lawyer's residence, Schaffzin said.

Federal district courts in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, and Virginia were closed on Monday, as were the Courts of Appeals for the Second, Third, and D.C. Circuits in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., respectively.

"I had a couple deals close this morning actually, so the world moves on," said Schaffzin, declining to elaborate on the specifics of the deal. "At some point, everything will grind to a stand-still," he said.

Lawyers at White & Case, located on Sixth Avenue in midtown, were also working remotely, said partner Mort Pierce. "In the past, in bad storms, if something had to get done, and people had to be in the office to get the work done, they always found a way," Pierce said in an email. "I assume it will be no different this time."

Attorneys at Perkins Coie's Manhattan office were working to obtain an early filing date for several trading system patent applications for a financial services client, according to a Perkins Coie spokesman.

Firms with a presence outside of the northeastern United States leaned on offices in those cities to pick up some of the slack. Reed Smith's Global Customer Center in Pittsburgh was "answering the telephones and handling other matters for the closed locations," Pat Hiltibidal, the firm's chief of offices services, said in an email.

Kramer Levin's backup business continuity center in Long Island, which runs parallel systems to the firm's New York office in case of a power outage, remained on alert.

Hurricane Irene in August 2011 informed some of firms' contingency planning for Hurricane Sandy. Locke Lord provided more information to attorneys this time around, said a spokeswoman. In the event that communications go down in New York, the firm's Chicago office will send out updates on office openings and preparation guidelines via their internal website and a telephone hotline, she said.

Honeybees harbor antibiotic-resistance genes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Bacteria in the guts of honeybees are highly resistant to the antibiotic tetracycline, probably as a result of decades of preventive antibiotic use in domesticated hives. Researchers from Yale University identified eight different tetracycline resistance genes among U.S. honeybees that were exposed to the antibiotic, but the genes were largely absent in bees from countries where such antibiotic use is banned.

The study appears on October 30 in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

"It [resistance] seems to be everywhere in the U.S.," says Nancy Moran of Yale University, a senior author on the study. "There's a pattern here, where the U.S. has these genes and the others don't."

Honeybees the world over are susceptible to the bacterial disease called "foulbrood," which can wipe out a hive faster than beekeepers can react to the infection. In the U.S., beekeepers have kept the disease at bay with regular preventive applications of the antibiotic oxytetracycline, a compound that closely resembles tetracycline, which is commonly used in humans. Oxytetracycline has been in use among beekeepers since the 1950s, and many genes that confer resistance to oxytetracycline also confer resistance to tetracycline.

Using sensitive molecular techniques, Moran and her colleagues screened honeybees from several locations in the United States and from Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand as well as several wild bumblebees from the Czech Republic, for the presence and abundance of tetracycline resistance genes. They found that U.S. honeybees have greater numbers and a more diverse set of tetracycline resistance genes than honeybees from the other countries.

Moran says it is reasonable to expect to see widespread resistance among bees, considering the decades-long use of oxytetracycline in honeybee hives. "It seems likely this reflects a history of using oxytetracycline since the 1950s. It's not terribly surprising. It parallels findings in other domestic animals, like chickens and pigs," says Moran.

Moran notes that beekeepers have long used oxytetracycline to control the bacterium that causes foulbrood, but the pathogen eventually acquired resistance to tetracycline itself. Of the foulbrood pathogens Melissococcus pluton and Paenibacillus larvae, Moran says, "They carry tetL, which is one of the eight resistance genes we found. It's possible that the gene was transferred either from the gut bacteria to the pathogen or from the pathogen to the gut bacteria."

Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand do not allow beekeepers to use oxytetracycline in hives, so it is perhaps predictable that honeybees and wild bumblebees from these countries harbored only two or three different resistance genes and only in very low copy numbers, suggesting that the bacteria did not require the genes very frequently.

The authors of the study point out that by encouraging resistance and altering the bacteria that live in honeybee guts, decades of antibiotic applications may have actually been detrimental to honeybee wellbeing. Studies have suggested that the bacterial residents of the honeybee gut play beneficial roles in neutralizing toxins in the bees' diet, nutrition, and in defending the bee against pathogens. By disrupting the honeybee microbiota and reducing its diversity, long-term antibiotic use could weaken honeybee resistance to other diseases. Hence, the treatment that was meant to prevent disease and strengthen the hive may actually weaken its ability to fight off other pathogens.

Moran says while the study is interesting from the perspective of honeybee health and could have implications for how honeybee diseases are managed, the presence of resistance genes in the honeybee gut doesn't pose a direct risk to humans. These gut bacteria, says Moran, "don't actually live in the honey, they live in the bee. We've never actually detected them in the honey. When people are eating honey, they're not eating these bacteria."

Google Music comes to Europe November 13, brings Google Music match, too

Folks may be more excited about the newest Nexus phones, tablets and their fresh flavor of Jelly Bean, but Mountain View also unveiled a little something for music lovers across the pond today. That's right, Google Music is coming to Europe beginning November 13th. Unfortunately, not everyone on the continent will gain access, but residents of the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain will have Google's musical cloud servies in just a couple weeks. Not only that, Big G is adding an iTunes Match-style feature to Google Music that'll scan your songs and add them to your cloud library, no uploading required. The feature will launch in Europe, with US residents enjoying the feature "soon after."

It is designed to help control the effect of heat and cold on the inside of the facility.? The insulation?s material blocks or retards the amount of heat exchanged between the inside and outside of the building.
Using the right thermal insulation in your home or business structure you will need to know the R value of the material.? The R value is a measure of the thermal resistance the insulating material is capable of.? The larger the number, the better the insulation?s effectiveness.?

The higher the value, the lesser amount of heat is exchanged through the insulation.? A higher R value may be necessary in a climate with extreme changes in temperature to block the effects of extreme cold or heat.? A lesser R value rated insulation can be used in a moderate climate where the temperature variations are small.

The R value of thermal insulation will naturally affect the cost of the material.? The higher R value, better quality insulation is usually thicker with more material and, consequently, more expensive.? Lower R value insulation is less effective in the same area, but lower in cost.? Once installed in the home or business, the insulation becomes part of the investment in the building.? Making a higher investment in better insulation up front will garner savings over the years with reduced utility costs.? Well insulated structures allow heating and cooling systems to function more efficiently so there are savings in equipment maintenance and replacement over the out years in this area as well.

Thermal insulation normally installed in roof or attic spaces comes in batts or rolls.? Sized to the various standard widths between joists and studs, the material is cut to a uniform length in batts or left as a continuous sheet on roll.

While properly utilized thermal insulation is the main component of a comfortable living or working environment, other components, like roof ventilation systems extend can extend its useful life.? A roof ventilation system keeps humidity and moisture from damaging your ceiling and prevents mould and mildew growth.

Today?s teens are tomorrow?s online customers ? and a recent study appears to show that the future will be bright for online businesses as the younger generation continue to embrace the internet and social networks.

While 12-15 year olds have traditionally spent most of their media time watching TV (which is why the parents amongst our readers will have noticed a rise in adverts making use of ?pester-power?), a new report from Ofcom shows that teenagers are turning off the TV set and logging on to the internet.
