College Preparatory School ? Is It Right For Your Child?

The typical college preparatory school has a good reputation among parents of students, but not every student needs to go to one. If you are wondering if your child would benefit from this type of environment, you should get an idea of the advantages offered to students. Then you can make an informed decision.

Schools like this are usually great and even necessary when you want your child to go to an impressive university. If you and your high schooler have your eye on the Ivy League schools, or other colleges that require very good stats to get in, you may need the boost that a college preparatory school will offer. Schools of this caliber usually provide challenging classes and experienced teachers who can push students to do their best, with the full knowledge that every grade counts when you want to get into a great university. If you know your child is motivated to get a degree from a highly rated school, you should enroll him or her in this kind of institution.

You also need to make sure your child can handle the pressure and expectations that come with a college preparatory school. Most students at these schools are particularly driven and strive to get good grades in tough classes. If your child tends to get good grades and is even bored in regular classes, you should consider switching schools so he or she is properly challenged. Most kids who were previously bored appreciate being enrolled in tougher courses that can challenge them and prepare them for a university in the future.

Finally, you have to make sure you are prepared to pay for the tuition associated with a college preparatory school. Like typical private schools, they cost money that most people would only expect from colleges. Of course, you get a lot of advantages for your money, but that does not make it any more affordable. Some children can get need-based scholarships, or you may have to take out loans. Either way, you need to be able to budget for four years at schools like this if you want to avoid disrupting your child?s education by suddenly not being able to afford it anymore.

If you are considering college preparatory school for your student, you should schedule an interview at a few local schools of this type. This way, you can find out which one, if any, is the right fit for your family. Interviews and campus tours can also let you see whether your high schooler really wants to go there or not.

Using The Best Info Out There To Save On Auto Insurance | AMI ...

Finding the best insurance policy with the most coverage can be difficult, but when you factor in finding the lowest premiums, it can be a nightmare! This article contains a number of tips to help you combine the two issues, coverage and cost, without adding in a major headache to the process.
?
When considering insurance for a young driver, it is wise to not purchase an expensive car. Rates are high enough for teenagers, they will skyrocket depending on the type and worth of a car. In this situation, safety is one of the highest factors effecting insurance costs.
?
If you are just buying a car for jetting around town, see if your insurance company offers discounts for low mileage driving. The less you drive, the less likely you are to have an accident that your insurance will have to pay for. Most companies recognize this with discount offers.
?
Pay your auto insurance premiums in full. There are usually added fees tacked onto your rates if you decide to stretch your payments to monthly payments or even once-every- two-month payments. Also, rates are often cheaper when you have them set to auto-debit from your checking account instead of using a credit card to pay them.
?
If you plan on buying a new car but want to keep your insurance rates low, buy a cheaper car. The more expensive a car is to repair, the more money your insurer will require from you. You will save money both in buying a lower priced car and in insuring it, keeping it safely in your pocket.
?
J.D. Power ratings are a very handy guide for selecting an auto insurance company. They compare insurers on a number of criteria like cost, coverage options, claims handling, and customer satisfaction. They also take surveys with insurance customers to find which company has happy customers and which tend to cause problems for their customers.
?
Keep full coverage if you can not afford to replace your car on your own. Not being able to replace your car could occur when you have no money saved, your credit cards will not cover a new car purchase and you have bad credit scores that would impede you from getting a new car easily. Full coverage helps to protect you from a disastrous loss that you can?t pay for yourself.
?
Be sure to shop around and gather multiple insurance quotes. This way you can be sure that you are not getting ripped off and getting the best possible coverage for the price. Taking time to examine different companies? prices can save a whole lot of trouble.
?
Find out your state?s minimum liabilty insurance requirements before shopping for auto insurance. Also, find out how much an insurer will charge you for different car models if you are in the market for a new car. A sports coupe can cost hundreds or even thousands more than coverage for a safe family car with all of the latest safety features.
?
Even though auto insurance is something that?s required by law for you have, make sure that you sign with a company that?s right for you. You can choose who you sign with and what coverage you may need. Apply the tips above for a foolproof way to obtain the right auto insurance for

Harvard: Dozens of students may have cheated

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) ? Harvard University is investigating whether dozens of undergraduate students cheated on a take-home exam last spring.

School officials said they discovered students may have shared answers or plagiarized on a final exam. They declined to release the name of the class, the students' names or the exact number being investigated, citing privacy laws.

The undergraduate class had a minimum of 250 students and possible cheating was discovered in roughly half the take-home exams, university officials said Thursday.

"These allegations, if proven, represent totally unacceptable behavior that betrays the trust upon which intellectual inquiry at Harvard depends," President Drew Faust said.

A Harvard spokesman said he knows of no incidents in recent memory of possible cheating at the university on this scale.

Each student whose work is in question has been called to appear before a subcommittee of the Harvard College Administrative Board, which reviews issues of academic integrity, said Jay M. Harris, dean of undergraduate education. He emphasized that none of the allegations has been proven and said there's no evidence of widespread cheating at Harvard.

"The facts that are before us are that we have a problem in this one course," Harris said. "I hope that doesn't sound overly naive, I don't want to be naive, but this is what we have. The rest would be speculation.

"Looking at the students we have and the work that they do, I would be loathe to say this is something that represents Harvard students generally."

The spring course included undergraduates at all class levels, Harris said. A teaching assistant noticed some possible problems on the tests, including evidence that students collaborated on answers or used the same long, identical strings of words. The exam had clear instructions that no collaboration was allowed, Harris said.

The assistant notified the professor, who referred the case in May to the administrative board. After interviewing some students, the board found what Harris characterized as "cause for concern."

Depending on the offense, the punishments range from an admonition, a sort of warning for a first offense, to being forced to withdraw from Harvard for a year. It wasn't immediately clear what sanctions any student who has graduated may face.

There's no timeline for when the investigation will be finished, Harris said.

Michael Zimmet, a freshman from Aspen, Colo., said news of the investigation was surprising.

"You think of Harvard as somewhere where people are academically honest and interested in their course work," he said.

Tiffany Fonseca, a sophomore from Boston, said she didn't know the details of what happened, but that it was easy to see how students could talk to each other about a take-home test.

"I'm kind of shocked, but I'm not," she said.

In response to the allegations, a Harvard committee led by Harris will present recommendations on how to enforce faculty-wide expectations of academic honesty.

Teresa Fishman of the International Center for Academic Integrity at Clemson University said it is not surprising that Harvard isn't immune to possible cheating. She said 20 years of data shows that a quarter to a third of students across all levels of collegiate education admit cheating on tests.

Feuding Russian tycoons face London court ruling

LONDON (AP) ? Two Russian businessmen rose to riches together in the chaotic years of post-Soviet Russia and then became archenemies ? and a British judge will soon rule on which oligarch will defeat the other in a multi-billion-dollar court battle.

After a seven-month delay, Judge Elizabeth Gloster is expect to deliver a summary ruling Friday to settle the legal feud between Roman Abramovich, the billionaire Chelsea Football Club owner, and self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovsky.

The feud, the most high-profile commercial case at London's High Court in recent years, has fascinated the British and Russian media with intriguing tales about the tycoons' jet-setting lives and the lawless Wild West years that followed the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union.

Berezovsky, 66, is a former Kremlin power broker who fled to Britain after falling out with President Vladimir Putin. He sued the 45-year-old Abramovich, who he calls his former friend, prot?g? and business partner, alleging that Abramovich threatened him into selling his stakes in the Russian oil giant Sibneft vastly beneath their value. Berezovsky alleged blackmail and breach of contract ? and is seeking more than 3 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) in damages.

Abramovich has denied the allegations and his lawyer has accused Berezovsky of lying and making up stories.

"I'm an optimistic person, it's in my genes. So, of course, I'm confident that the judgment will go my way," Berezovsky said ahead of the ruling.

Abramovich's lawyers did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment.

Both tycoons were cross-examined and sat across each other in the courtroom on most days during the four-month trial, which attracted large crowds of journalists, lawyers and spectators.

The case has sparked so much interest partly because of its focus on the two oligarchs' personal, as well as business, relationship. They were said to have become friends after meeting on a private cruise in the Caribbean, built a business empire together, but parted bitterly when their fortunes were reversed.

Berezovsky, a mathematician-turned-Mercedes dealer, amassed his wealth during Russia's privatization of state assets in the early 1990s. In return for backing former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, he gained powerful political connections and access to valuable assets at very low prices.

Berezovsky says he mentored the younger Abramovich, treated him like a son, and founded Sibneft with him and a third partner. Berezovsky claimed that the friendship faltered when he fell out with Putin, at which point Abramovich "intimidated" him into selling his Sibneft shares ? causing him losses of almost $6 billion.

In separate claims, Berezovsky also alleged breach of trust and breach of contract when Abramovich sold Berezovsky's alleged stake in aluminum conglomerate Rusal without his consent.

Abramovich claims that Berezovsky was not his mentor and never owned the stakes ? in fact, he argued that Berezovsky only had a political role in creating Sibneft and never "contributed a single cent" to acquiring or building up the company.

According to Abramovich, he had already paid more than $2.5 billion to Berezovsky for his services as his "political godfather" ? a protector whose political influence helped him do business ? and reluctantly funded Berezovsky's extravagant lifestyle of yachts and vacation homes because he feared retaliation. He doesn't owe Berezovsky any more money, he said.

"Our business relationship was over and yet he still treated me as his 'cash cow' and expected me to fund all of his expenses," Abramovich claimed in a statement. He described Berezovsky as ambitious, sometimes megalomaniacal, and a man who "would often start believing his own PR."

Charged in Russia with fraud and embezzlement, Berezovsky has been living in London since 2001.

Abramovich lives in Russia and is known to some as the "stealth oligarch" because of his low profile, but is widely known in Britain since he bought the Chelsea soccer club in 2003. His wealth is estimated to be 9.5 billion pounds (about $15 billion) by The Sunday Times.

The pair's feud is just one among many lucrative commercial fraud cases dealing with Russia and Central Asia that have found their way into London courts. Lawyers say many wealthy Russians distrust the legal infrastructure in their own country and flock to English courtrooms because they believe they can find fairness there.

Friday's summary verdict will be followed soon after by the handing down of an extended judgment, and lawyers from both sides will meet in the next few weeks to discuss appeals and legal costs.

Moving Towards A More Robust And Powerful CrunchBase API

crunchbase-api4As many of you know, TechCrunch's startup database, CrunchBase, ?makes a lot of its data freely available through an easy-to-use REST API, which launched about four years ago. The CrunchBase API has been open, free, and without rate limits, which probably explains its success. TechCrunch has made this data easily available so developers can create interesting apps, mashups, and analysis. Currently, there are about 150 million data calls per month, which suggests to us that CrunchBase is working well, so well in fact that we have to think carefully about the future of CrunchBase and its ecosystem.

Assad says more time needed to win Syria battle

President Bashar al-Assad said his forces need more time to win the battle in Syria and scoffed at the idea of creating buffer zones for displaced people, as fighting raged nationwide.

Assad's statements, in an interview with pro-regime Addounia channel, came after a car bomb rocked a funeral in a Damascus suburb on Tuesday, killing 27 people.

"I can summarise in one phrase: we are progressing, the situation on the ground is better but we have not yet won -- this will take more time," Assad said in the interview with the private channel.

He also rejected an idea being championed by Turkey of creating buffer zones within Syria to receive those displaced by the conflict so they do not flood across the borders into neighbouring countries.

"Talk of buffer zones firstly is not on the table and secondly it is an unrealistic idea by hostile countries and the enemies of Syria," he said.

Assad also accused "the Turkish state of bearing a direct responsibility for the spilling of blood inside Syria."

French President Francois Hollande said on Monday France was working with its partners on the possible establishment of such buffer zones.

But his foreign minister, Laurent Fabius, admitted on Wednesday implementing these would be "very complicated" and require the imposition of partial no-fly zones.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said Turkey is in talks with the United Nations on ways to shelter thousands of refugees on Syrian soil.

"We expect the United Nations to step in for the protection of refugees inside Syria and if possible housing them in camps there," Davutoglu was quoted as saying by Turkey's Anatolia news agency.

He was speaking before leaving for New York to attend a UN Security Council meeting on refugees on Thursday.

Human Rights Watch urged Syria's neighbours to keep their borders open to refugees, but Jordan said it would send home Syrians who attacked and injured more than 20 police in clashes at the Zaatari refugee camp near the border on Tuesday.

Assad on Wednesday also mocked regime defectors, saying their departure amounted to a "self-cleansing of the government firstly and the country generally."

Syria's government has been rattled by several high-profile defections as the conflict has escalated, including former premier Riad Hijab and prominent General Manaf Tlass, a childhood friend of Assad.

"Despite several mistakes, there is a strong bond" between the regime and the Syrian people, Assad insisted, boasting the support of the majority of the population.

"What is happening is neither a revolution nor a Spring, it is about terrorist acts in every sense of the term," he said.

--- Battle for Taftanaz airport ---

-----------------------------------

Syrian rebels, meanwhile, said they destroyed five helicopters in a raid on a military airport between the northern cities of Aleppo and Idlib on Wednesday, while state television said the attack was repelled.

Abu Mossab, a rebel who said he took part in the attack, told AFP via Skype that rebels shelled Taftanaz military airport with two tanks captured from the army and destroyed five helicopters.

"We destroyed five helicopters as well as buildings in the airport," Abu Mossab said, although it remained in army hands after the raid in which the rebels lost two men before withdrawing.

State television said the military repelled the attack with the airport suffering "no material damage."

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights earlier reported fierce fighting near the airport and helicopter raids on the nearby town of Taftanaz.

In Damascus, activists reported a third straight day of army attacks on rebel strongholds in the eastern outer belt of the city, collectively referred to as East Ghuta.

State media said "terrorist mercenaries" had killed four civilians in Zamalka, using its term for rebels fighting government forces since the anti-regime uprising broke out in March 2011.

They had "murdered citizens, including women and men, under the eyes of inhabitants... The terrorists then gathered the bodies of the victims and put them in a mosque in Qadi Askar" district, the SANA news agency said.

It said the assailants had planned to blow up the mosque and then blame the attack on government forces.

State-run newspaper Tishrin said Tuesday's car bombing of a funeral in Damascus was an indication that the "terrorist" groups have reached "a very advanced stage of despair and bankruptcy."

The bombing hit Jaramana, a mainly Druze and Christian town on the southeastern outskirts of Damascus that the Observatory described as generally supportive of Assad's government.

Russia on Wednesday called for an impartial investigation into the latest "barbaric" violence in and around Damascus.

"We insist on a meticulous and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the latest tragic events" using the resources of the United Nations' newly opened office in Damascus, the Russian foreign ministry said.

It singled out the car bomb and the discovery of several hundred bodies near the Damascus suburb of Daraya on Sunday that the rebels charge was the result of a massacre by regime forces.

In violence nationwide on Wednesday, at least 101 people were killed, including 56 civilians, according to the Observatory, which says more than 25,000 people have been killed in the 17-month-long revolt.

The new UN-Arab League envoy on the Syria conflict, Lakhdar Brahimi, wants to visit Damascus in the next three weeks, his spokesman told reporters at the United Nations.

Meanwhile, UN chief Ban Ki-moon held talks in Tehran with Iran's leaders including on the Syria conflict.

After meeting parliament speaker Ali Larijani, Iran's parliamentary news website quoted Ban as saying: "Iran can play an important role in solving the Syrian crisis peacefully."

Iran, the chief ally of Syria's regime, accuses the United States, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar of sustaining the revolt in Syria.

In Paris, the French presidency said Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi had agreed that there could be no political solution for Syria unless Assad left power, in a telephone conversation with Hollande.

Illinois governor rejects plan to expand gambling | The Salt Lake ...

FILE - In this Aug. 17, 2012 file photo Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn speaks with reporters at the Illinois state Capitol in Springfield. On Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012, Quinn announced his plan to veto a bill to expand gambling, saying the proposed bill lacked sufficient regulatory oversight. (AP Photo/Seth Perlman, File)

Chicago ? Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday rejected a bill to expand gambling in Illinois that would have made way for a land-based casino in Chicago, saying the proposal lacked sufficient regulatory oversight.

With his two immediate predecessors in prison, the Chicago Democrat said integrity must be a hallmark of the gambling plan, which also proposed establishing four new riverboat casinos and allowing slot machines at racetracks.

The most glaring omission from the bill "is the absence of strict ethical standards and comprehensive regulatory oversight. Illinois should never settle for a gaming bill that includes loopholes for mobsters," Quinn said in a statement announcing the veto.

He urged legislators to work with him on its shortcomings, although the bill?s House sponsor said his attempts to meet with Quinn have been rebuffed. Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, predicted there would be enough House votes this fall to override Quinn?s veto.

At a suburban Chicago appearance late Tuesday morning, Quinn rejected that forecast.

"That veto will be sustained," he told reporters. "I think I did the right thing."

Supporters of the bill estimated the expansion could have brought in up to $1 billion a year, boost tourism and create 100,000 jobs for the state. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel supported the establishment of a city casino. Opponents meanwhile warned of market saturation and raised concerns about the social costs.

The proposal would have established a city-owned Chicago casino with spots for 4,000 people to gamble at once. It also would have added riverboat casinos in Danville, Park City, Rockford and an undecided location in Chicago?s south suburbs. Each riverboat casino would have had 1,600 gambling positions and allowed Illinois? 10 existing casinos to grow.

Quinn, who isn?t opposed to gambling on principle, had said all along that he wanted a bill with stronger ethical protections. That includes barring the gambling industry from making political contributions. He said the proposal has "too many defects" for him to consider using his amendatory veto powers to change it.

"It?s one thing if you had to make some technical changes here and there," Quinn said Tuesday. "This bill just falls way short of what the people of Illinois need when it comes to ethics in government."

story continues below

In his veto message, Quinn took aim at the proposed Chicago casino, claiming the bill would have allowed it to play by different rules. He said the Illinois Gaming Board wouldn?t have the same regulatory authority over the Chicago outlet as it holds over other casinos in the state and that the city casino would not have to follow the state?s procurement code in handing out contracts.

That would leave taxpayer-financed contracts "vulnerable to organized crime, unsavory influence and potentially overpriced vendors," Quinn wrote.

In earlier responses to the governor?s critique, lawmakers offered follow-up legislation to address some of the concerns. However that wouldn?t be considered unless the initial law is signed, and Quinn has said he?d rather get all the legislation signed at once.

Lang said he would seek an override in the fall legislative session and dismissed the suggestion that Quinn might be open to discussing differences with the legislation?s authors.

"The bottom line is he doesn?t want to sign a gaming bill," Lang said. "If he had language to propose, he would have proposed it."

Quinn also criticized the legislation for providing too little support for public education. Past gambling expansions have been designed to bring in more revenue for public services such as schools, but the 1991 law that created riverboat casinos was intended to help economically depressed cities.

News networks stay live overnight to cover Isaac

NEW YORK (AP) ? Some television news networks are planning to stay on live overnight to follow Hurricane Isaac and its impact on the Gulf Coast.

CNN, Fox News Channel and The Weather Channel said Tuesday they will stay with storm coverage all night. CNN and Fox usually air reruns of prime-time shows in the wee hours.

MSNBC says it hasn't made a decision on staying live.

Anderson Cooper is leading CNN's coverage from New Orleans, with Shepard Smith on Fox. All the news networks have mixed news of the storm in with Republican National Convention coverage.

The convention is taking place in Tampa, Fla., after being delayed by nasty weather.

Forecasters say the slow-moving storm could dump prodigious amounts of rain on the New Orleans area.

Motorola, Intel taking us to the edge in London on Sept. 18

Motorola-Intel

Intel and Motorola joined forces earlier this year - now it's time to see the fruits of their labor.

That's a big announcement, eh? Motorola and Intel, the marriage first announced way back in January at CES, finally appears to be coming to fruition. (Right on schedule, actually.) So what will we see when the two companies "take us to the edge" on Sept. 18 in London? Most likely, it'll be a production-caliber Android smartphone based off Intel's Medfield platform that it's been teasing us with lo these many months, with its speed, power and promised battery savings that come from the Atom SOC.

Smartphone? Tablet? As always, we'll be there to bring you the whole thing as it happens. Set your calendars, folks!

Divorced parents in hostile relationships use technology to sabotage communication, MU study finds

COLUMBIA, Mo. ? Separated and divorced couples are increasingly using emails, texting and social media to communicate with their ex-partners about their children. However, when ex-spouses use that technology to withhold or manipulate information, the children are the ones who suffer most, according to a University of Missouri family studies expert. A new study suggests divorce counselors should teach separated parents effective ways to use communication technology in order to maintain healthy environments for their children.

Lawrence Ganong, a professor of human development and family studies at MU, found that ex-partners who were cooperative with one another used emails and texting to facilitate effective co-parenting, while couples who did not get along used communication technology to avoid confrontations and control their former partners' access to their children.

"Technology makes it easier for divorced couples to get along, and it also makes it easier for them not to get along," said Ganong, who also is a professor of nursing at MU. "Parents who use technology effectively can make co-parenting easier, which places less stress on the children. Parents who use communication technology to manipulate or withhold information from the other parent can cause pain to the child."

Ganong says divorce counselors should teach separated parents effective ways to use communication technology so disagreements do not harm their children.

Ganong and his colleagues interviewed 49 divorced parents individually about the quality of their relationships with their ex-partners.

Parents who had cooperative relationships saw communication technology (email, texting) as an effective tool to coordinate exchanges of their children, and some even used online calendars to share information about their children's activities. However, separated parents who had hostile relationships used the same technology to manipulate their ex-spouses and limit communication. For example, some parents in the study pretended they never received emails from their former partners. Regardless of how the couples got along, nearly all of the divorced parents used communication technology to maintain household boundaries and establish records of decisions.

When divorces end with some hostility between the parents, Ganong suggests that divorce counselors focus on teaching the couples effective ways to use technology to communicate with one another. Doing so will help children transition more smoothly between the two homes and keep them from being caught in the middle of their parents' conflicts, he said.

"Parents who are hostile need to set their feelings aside and understand that they need to communicate effectively in order to protect the emotional well-being of their children," Ganong said. "Email is a great resource for hostile parents who can't talk face-to-face. They can communicate essential information while editing what they say to avoid conflict. Also, the parents have a record of what was agreed upon."

FAA Study May Loosen Restrictions on In-Flight Gadget Use

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday it will study the use of portable electronic devices on airliners, potentially opening the door to allowing greater use of smartphones, tablets or e-readers during flights. Currently, the FAA requires airlines to determine which devices can safely be used in-flight.

How to protect your small business' intellectual property ...

August 27, 2012, 5:08 AM PDT

Takeaway: It may not seem important when your company is young and small, but taking precautions concerning your intellectual property now will pay off in the long run.

The two most important resources to a small business are time and money. That?s why when a subject like intellectual property (IP) comes up, it gets shoved aside for more immediate items. IP is always thought to involve expensive lawyers and costly lawsuits that only big companies worry about. Ironically, small businesses are more likely to be put out of business by larger companies if they refuse to protect their business property.

Consider this real-life example: Cryptography Research, a 20-employee data security technology firm based in San Francisco that began in 2004 decided to pursue litigation against the credit card giant Visa. Cryptography asserted that Visa was infringing on its patents that covered smart cards.? After selling off a piece of its business, Cryptography became a formidable opponent for Visa. The gamble paid off with Visa agreeing to settle out of court with the right to license the technology from Cryptography. By use of a patent that gave the company exclusive right to prevent and stop others from making, using, selling or offering for sale its product and process, based on the patented invention, it secured a crucial component of its business.

So how do you protect your small business intellectual property from the big boys or from fierce competition, either through the Internet, or on the global market?

Patents

Granted, many small businesses don?t have products or processes that can be patented. However, for those that do, they are worth protecting. A case in point involves the small holding company NTP and (BlackBerry maker) RIM. The epic lawsuit between the two companies would eventually see RIM paying millions of dollars to license the wireless e-mail delivery innovation from NTP.? Patents like this open doors to their owners in terms of licensing and cross-licensing while closing doors to competitors, effectively protecting a company?s competitive advantage.

Trademarks

A trademarked name could well be the foundation of a product or service line. Protecting your trademark is a way of protecting your future business growth. Big brands like Apple and Burge King spend millions building their brands. Small businesses expecting to grow can preserve their assets by using and protecting their trademarks in the early stages. This includes securing the Web address or URL of your business or product before someone else does.

Copyrighting

A copyright gives you the right to play, print, publish, or perform a piece of material or content. One danger that small businesses are facing on the Internet is the proliferation of sharing. Protecting your sold products and services from Internet piracy through copyrighting can not only enhance your small business security but also help in case some big brand decides to benefit from your work without a license. Some of the things you can copyright include website content, product literature, product catalogs, packaging content, labels and marketing or advertising materials.

Data protection

While you may not have a life-altering product like the iPhone or a global service like Google Search, your small business data is a valuable asset and deserves to be protected just the same. Having a well-defined security plan that includes mobile device policies, social network use, and sharing trade secrets will ensure that your information does not leak out.

Auditing your data to get a clear picture of where your sensitive data resides and who can access it can help you put some of these rules in place. You can employ sophisticated defense measures like application white-listing which restrict only trusted programs to run on your corporate network. Tools like MobileIron are also available that enforce security compliance for data on mobile devices.

It may not seem important when your company is young and small, but taking precautions concerning your intellectual property now will pay off in the long run.

New Bluetooth standards good news for fitness devices

9 hrs.

An update to the Bluetooth standard is making it easier for devices like Nike+ and the Fitbit, which need to transmit information like steps taken and pedal cadence, ?but had to brew their own solutions for doing so. Now they can use Bluetooth, just like earpieces and other accessories,?to do so.

These popular fitness accessories have been working with juryrigged solutions over the last couple years, which isn't a problem for a big company like Nike to tackle, but a startup on a shoestring budget doesn't have the cash or time to build their own wireless protocol.

The update will allow this type of simple, real-time data flow to happen over a device's?ubiquitous wireless interface that has, in the past, been used almost entirely for audio. It should make it easier for new devices to work with smartphones to do interesting things like combine a map of your bike ride?with your pace.

There aren't any devices using the brand new running- and cycling-oriented profiles just?yet (though there are many that may soon support them), but expect them to show up soon, perhaps at the upcoming CES consumer electronics show in January. More information on the new interface can be found in the Bluetooth Special Interest Group's press release.

Gold Still A Sound Investment

PHOTOS.COM

Ahead of the annual monetary policy gabfest at Jackson Hole retreat in Wyoming, members of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve have been quietly hinting that another round of stimulus or ?quantitative easing? (inflationary money printing) may be on the horizon.

Speculation that the Fed will again act and questions about its continued near-zero interest rate policy and what long-term effects a new round of quantitative easing will have on the U.S. economy have created some volatility in markets. But one area where volatility has been remarkably low (not surprisingly given historical evidence) is precious metals.

Over the next 18 months, most analysts expect gold prices to fluctuate little between $1,750 and $1,800 with a high side of $2,000. As the European Union continues to falter and talk of the U.S. economic cliff becomes louder and more constant, precious metal prices can only improve. Silver should stick it out in the mid $30s per ounce range over the 18-month period, but economic uncertainty has the potential to push the lesser precious metal to unchartered highs, according to some market watchers.

While investing in physical gold and silver is a good idea in the eyes of most well-prepared investors, it is also a good time to reap benefits from investments in precious metal-mining operations.

Over the past four weeks, gold and silver shares have outperformed Standard & Poor?s 500 index with gold up by about 3.3 percent and silver 9.1 percent. Analysts expect further upward mobility.

The immigration factor: inviting an additional 100 million into USA

Part 5: The immigration factor?what it will look like in America if we fail to stop mass immigration

Part 1: The Immigration factor?inviting 100 million people into USA

Exactly 38 years from now, if Congress and the American people continue to do nothing, our country will house an additional 100 million third world immigrants.?? It may not affect those Americans over 40 because they will be dead, but it will definitely affect anyone under 40.? It will affect all races, creeds and colors.? It will especially affect the poor, illiterate and disenfranchised.? It will destroy our middle class.? It will affect the rich as to our degraded civilization and it will affect our environment in ways we cannot imagine, but we?re getting a peek each summer with drought, gas prices, food prices, water shortages, tornadoes, wildfires and aberrant weather patterns.

This four part series is going to curl your eyebrows and it will sober a lifelong drunk. It will make mothers cry and create anguish in fathers who see their children?s lives diminished beyond comprehension.? It?s going to cost our civilization its prosperity, its freedoms and its cohesiveness.? Adding another 100 million immigrants to America will change the very foundation of our culture, language and way of life.

Adding 100 million more immigrants will create water, energy, food and resource nightmares beyond understanding.? It will create limits on our freedoms such as visiting national parks, driving a car, ability to choose a college, attempting to work at a job we enjoy and dozens of other consequences.? We can ignore reality for a little while longer, but reality will not ignore us.

In this series, you will see what you can do to change course by your collective power.? You will be introduced to the consequences to your children.? If you do nothing as most Americans are doing nothing today, this armada of humanity, over 100 million immigrants strong, will inundate this country with cultural poverty, incompatible religions, cultural illiteracy and displace America?s culture with a polyglot of cultures that will redefine the United States of America into the Disunited States of America or Fractured States of America.

Our country will not remain the United States of America that we knew in 1990 before this massive onslaught of humanity accelerated.

Before we proceed, let?s discover how it started.? In 1963, we housed 193 million Americans (not hyphenated I might add) and gasoline cost 24.9 a gallon.? In 1965, U.S. Senator Teddy Kennedy (D-MA) rammed the 1965 Immigration Reform Act through Congress with no debate. It jumped immigration from 200,000 annually to 1.2 to 1.5 million annually from all over the world.? Within 40 years to 2008, we added 100 million people.? Gas now costs $3.75 a gallon and we have 46 million Americans subsisting on food stamps with 22 million unemployed or under employed.? Nonetheless, Congress adds 100,000 legal immigrants every 30 days, month in and month out, year in and year out.

The intelligent U.S. family chose a stable population by enjoying 2.03 fertility rates from 1970 to present day.? But, our U.S. Congress exploded our numbers with unlimited immigration, chain migration, birth rates and lottery visas.? Congress also exploded illegal immigration by not enforcing our laws since Dwight D. Eisenhower.? Those actions resulted in hitting 300 million people by October of 2009.? Today, we grow by 3 million annually and presently exceed 315 million people.? We will reach 100 million by 2035 and 138 million by 2050?a scant 38 years from now.

Of that 138 million, 100 million will be legal, illegal and their children, immigrants.? Obama just gave 1.9 million illegal alien migrants a free pass by executive order while he sued Arizona, Alabama and South Carolina for attempting to stop illegal immigration.? Those new ?Americans? will cost taxpayers over $900,000,000 to integrate into America as to food stamps, assisted housing, college classes, schools, medical care, chain migration and social security.

Congress adds 100,000 new legal immigrants every 30 days

The figures run like this:? 1.2 million legal immigrants annually but can go to 1.5 million as in the past.? Average of 900,000 births of immigrant children annually. Around 800,000 illegal immigrants annually crossing our borders.? That equals 3.1 million give or take annually added to the USA. (Sources: www.NumbersUSA.org , Center for Immigration Studies www.cis.org , U.S. Population Projections by Fogel/Martin from Federation for American Immigration Reform? www.FairUS.org , and U.S. Census Bureau)

Agencies promoting mass immigration and amnesty

Who supports continued and endless legal and illegal immigration?? How do they benefit from it?? How are they able to maintain such a throat choke-hold on Congress and the American people?

First of all, we absorb more legal immigrants than all other countries combined.? In fact, we take in more illegal migrants than all other countries combined.?? However, no matter how many immigrants Canada, Europe, Australia and other western countries absorb, the third world adds 80 million net gain of desperate people annually.? The line never ends.

In a five minute astoundingly simple yet brilliant video, ?Immigration, Poverty, and Gum Balls?, Roy Beck, director of www.numbersusa.ORG, graphically illustrates the impact of overpopulation.? Take five minutes to see for yourself:

?Immigration by the numbers?off the chart? by Roy Beck

This 10 minute demonstration shows Americans the results of unending mass immigration on the quality of life and sustainability for future generations: in a word ?Mind boggling!?? www.NumbersUSA.org

Who are the immigration culprits?? The Catholic Church loves to fill its pews with dues paying immigrants from Latin America.? The Church of Latter Day Saints pushes for limitless immigration.? The Lutheran Church loves to bring tens of thousands of Somalian, Sudan, Bangladeshi bush people immigrants from Africa/Asia and dump them on communities.? The U.S. Chamber of Commerce insists on endless legal and illegal immigration to fill cheap labor for restaurants, hotels, slaughter houses, landscaping, janitor and taxi cab driving jobs.? Multinational companies love third world labor that does not insist on standards or humane treatment.? Council on American-Islamic Relations, CAIR, a Muslim organization insists on more Islamic immigration into America to beef up its numbers and growing power.

While African-Americans cannot secure jobs, Congress provides Indians from Asia unlimited loans to buy up motel chains across the nation.? One look at motels across America shows they are owned and operated by immigrant Indians who chain migrate their kin from their own overpopulated country of India.

Even the NAACP screws its own constituents by advocating for mass amnesty and mass immigration.? The American Civil Liberties Union advocates for mass amnesty and works against states? rights to pass laws to stop illegal migrants.? The Anti-Defamation League works in favor of illegal migrants along with People for the American way.? You may want to call them and give them a piece of your mind.

ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN advocate for mass immigration in order to grow their viewer ranks.? Major minority groups like LuLac, Chirla, LaRaza, Mecha and others advocate for increased and unlimited immigration to swell their ethnic ranks.

Finally, if the rest of us fail to stop this invasion of our country, we won?t have a pot to pee in within 38 years.? Our poor will be intractably poverty stricken. Our illiterates (now at 42 million Americans) will be wards of our welfare dollars.? Our cohesive nation will be a mass of squabbling idiots.? Crime will rule our streets.? Most Americans will flee the big cities like Detroit has already experienced. Over 1 million Detroiters fled that city within 20 years.?? Being an American will be indefinable.? Our country and culture will not be definable.? Our country will bankrupt and our way of life will be a fleeting dream in our rear view mirrors.

?Democracy cannot survive overpopulation,? said the great science fiction writer Isaac Asimov.

Between convention speeches come the campaign ads

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is "taxing wheelchairs and pacemakers." Mitt Romney would bring "an end to the Medicare promise." The Democratic incumbent has "hurt" the middle class and hasn't done "what we need him to do." If the Republican challenger wins, "the middle class loses."

Got all that?

Outside the halls for the two national party conventions, the candidates and their deep-pocketed allied groups are airing millions of dollars of television commercials ? regardless of whether they are factual or not ? to reinforce the messages sure to be delivered within.

In Florida alone, where the GOP will nominate Romney, more than $105 million has been spent on ads. North Carolina, where Obama will accept his party's nod next week, has seen at least $56 million worth of commercials during this campaign. Overall, political parties and outside groups have spent a stunning $540 million on TV ads, with most of the money being expended in battleground states.

Millions of dollars more are being spent this week in both Florida and North Carolina ? polls show them to be competitive ? as the two candidates look to tap into heightened political interest around the conventions that will send Romney and Obama into a two-month push to the election.

Republicans begin a bevy of speeches Tuesday, culminating with Romney's address on Thursday.

Even if Florida voters wanted to tune out the event in Tampa, they'll get healthy dose of the presidential campaign ? during morning television, sandwiched between evening news segments and all across the TV dial at night. The same goes for the Democratic show headed for Charlotte, N.C., next week. It wraps up with Obama making his nationally televised case for a second term.

Republicans desperately want to reclaim Florida and its 29 electoral votes after Obama notched a decisive win four years ago. North Carolina, with 15 electoral votes on the line, is hotly contested after Obama's 2008 victory broke a long string of Republican wins.

Florida has 10 distinct TV markets, making it a costly place for campaigns to navigate.

A weekend morning of Florida network television was indicative of a one-two-three punch:

? First was a soft-lit spot from Americans for Prosperity in which self-described Obama voters express regret after four years. "I think that now we've given Obama a fair chance and I don't think he's able to do what we need him to do," says a woman identified as Connie.

? The pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future came next with an ad splicing images of Romney and Obama at debate lecterns. A narrator accuses the president of having "wasted $800 billion on a failed stimulus and the jobless rate went up" while holding up Romney as a budget balancer and job creator in the public and private sectors.

? Before the TV show resumed, a third ad, aired by Romney's campaign, portrayed the Obama health care law as having ugly side effects. "Free health care comes at a very high price," the ad ends.

It's far from one-sided. Obama's campaign has a trio of commercials in rotation:

? One argues that Romney would break a health care promise to millions of future retirees by supporting a reworking of Medicare that moves away from direct payment to doctors and toward a voucher system in which future seniors would receive subsidies to shop the market and buy health insurance.

? Another paints Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, as out of the mainstream over their stances on abortion and family planning funding. "For women, for president, the choice is ours," it intones.

? The third ad features former President Bill Clinton talking straight into the camera about the election as a choice between visions ? of Obama as a defender of the middle-class and, in his view, of Romney as a protector of the rich.

There's also a commercial from the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA that piles on by saying Romney would see his tax burden fall at the expense of everyone else if he and Ryan enact proposals the Wisconsin congressman has sponsored. "If they win, the middle class loses," the ad concludes.

The airwaves in North Carolina are just as saturated with presidential ads.

For most of August, North Carolina viewers have been inundated with political ads alternatively supporting and deriding the competing presidential candidates. Images of Obama and Romney have become more plentiful than car salesmen, although the balance lately seems to have swung more Romney's way. During a recent nightly newscast in Raleigh, two political ads supporting Romney ran during the 30-minute show.
