Egypt's elected president defies military rulers

CAIRO -- Islamist Mohamed Mursi paid tribute Friday to Egypt's Muslims and Christians alike and symbolically swore himself in as the country's first elected civilian president before a huge crowd at Tahrir Square.

Crowds had thronged the square from early in the day ahead of the president-elect's appearance on the eve of his official swearing-in.

Mursi, who won a run-off election earlier this month, was received with applause by the tens of thousands of people gathered in the birthplace of the revolt that overthrew his predecessor Hosni Mubarak last year.

AP

Egypt's President-elect Mohammed Morsi waves to his supporters following Friday prayers at Al-Azhar mosque in Cairo.

He promised a "civilian state" and praised "the square of the revolution, the square of freedom," in what he called an address to "the free world, Arabs, Muslims... the Muslims of Egypt, Christians of Egypt."

Mursi symbolically swore himself in before the crowd, saying, "I swear to preserve the republican system ... and to preserve the independence" of Egypt.

Before his triumphant arrival, chants against the ruling military, which took over after Mubarak's overthrow, rang out from among the crowd as people gathered from mid-morning under a searing sun.

In his speech Mursi, whose election has raised concerns among Egypt's sizeable Coptic Christian community, served the United States with advance warning that his politics will be markedly different from those of his ousted predecessor.

He told the Tahrir crowd he would work to secure freedom for Omar Abdul Rahman, a blind Egyptian cleric jailed for life over the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

"I will do everything in my power to secure freedom for detainees... including Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman," Mursi said in his address to the throng packing the hub of the 2011 revolution.

Abdul Rahman was convicted in 1995 for his role in the World Trade Center bombing, plotting to bomb other New York targets including the United Nations, and a plan to assassinate Mubarak.

New guide to business risk published: Better skills essential to deliver

Dated: 29 June 2012

A new guide to business risk, published by the Institute of Directors (IoD) in association with Airmic, Chartis, PwC and Willis, urges UK Board members to improve their understanding and management of risk in order to successfully deliver growth and prevent future crises.

?Business Risk ? A practical guide for Board members? features contributions from a range of expert authors from across business and academia, and makes the case that:

  • Risk ? and particularly strategic risk ? are more important elements of a director?s job than they have ever been
  • Despite large amounts of media space having been devoted to the allocation of blame for the financial crisis, there remains much practical work to be done hardening companies in order to prevent future risk failures
  • Understanding how to assess risk at board level, and understanding how the Board should interact with risk professionals, are essential skills for all directors

Risk is an inherent and inevitable element of making decisions and developing a business. The Guide seeks to inform non-executive directors about how to avoid pitfalls, gain access to crucial information and ultimately bolster decision-making in order to mitigate unnecessary or excessive business risk.

The authors lay out in detail the roles and responsibilities of the board in assessing and managing business risk, the risk challenges currently facing UK businesses and the structural, personal and strategic solutions which can be used to address these challenges.

The full report can be downloaded in PDF format here.

Simon Walker, Director General of the Institute of Directors, said:

?If companies and the economy as a whole are to grow in today?s environment, it is vital that directors put risk management at the heart of business strategy. Understanding risk helps you to become more enterprising without jeopardising your business. On the other hand, take the wrong kind of risk and you are heading for disaster, whilst avoiding risk altogether means you are condemned to stagnation. This guide will help directors get this crucial balance right.?

John Hurrell, Chief Executive of Airmic, said:

?Directors have a vital leadership role when it comes to risk management within their companies, which is often misunderstood. This guide helps to convey our message that risk management can help to facilitate?profitable strategies as well as making firms more?resilient.?

Alpesh Shah, Director in PwC?s Actuarial Risk Practice, said:

?There are few aspects of a board?s functioning that are as crucial to long-term corporate success as risk management. Organisations that understand the risks they face and can articulate their risk appetite and define their risk strategy accordingly can have better decision-making, greater agility and a sharper competitive edge. The practical points in this guide will be invaluable as Board members strive to achieve this.?

Nicolas Aubert, MD of Chartis in the UK, said:

?More than ever risk managers need to be represented on company boards to help protect not only their companies but, more importantly perhaps, Board members themselves from underestimating the risks and sanctions they personally face. This practical guide should help them raise their profile at the highest levels within their organisations.?

Daniel Wilkinson, CEO of Willis UK, said:

?Unpredictable emerging threats like cyber, reputational and supply chain risks require Boards to take a long-term focus on building resilience throughout their organisations rather than having a traditional risk management policy based solely on anticipation. The resilience approach will help companies respond quickly and dynamically to threats by ensuring that the right expertise and processes are in place.?

A new energy in Poland

Jan Cienski in Warsaw

June 27, 2012

When the last football fans decamp from Poland at the end of June, there are fears that the investment boom that they helped cause ? Poland's five-year rush to build highways and airports in time for the Euro 2012 tournament ? will fade, dragging down the economy with it. While indications are that the peak of the transport building frenzy have passed, the economy's salvation could lie in the forthcoming wave of investments in power generation.

Mateusz Morawiecki, CEO of Poland's Bank Zachodni WBK, a unit of Spain's Santander, estimates that Poland will need to invest as much as ?41bn in energy over the next six or seven years. "The wave of investment could act as a cyclical buffer for the economy," he says, calculating that energy investments could make up for a predicted coming slump in consumption ? one of the main drivers of the Polish economy in recent years ? as well as a fall off in public investments in transport infrastructure.

The scale of Poland's future needs is vast. Most current generating capacity was still built in communist times, and is largely fired by black or brown coal ? providing more than 90% of Poland's electricity. Fitch, the ratings agency, estimates that Poland's three largest power companies will need to find funding of about ?9bn by 2015. In all, Poland is expected to need about ?50bn in energy investments until 2025 as old coal-fired plants are phased out and replaced with modern ones, as well as gas and nuclear plants, all while overall energy generating capacity is built up to accommodate Poland's growing economy.

Cleaning up

Poland has committed to generating more than 15% of its power from clean energy by 2020 ? part of the EU's pledge to reduce CO2 emissions ? creating a quickly growing new market. Wojciech Hann, a partner at Deloitte, the consultancy, estimates that coal's slice of the energy pie will shrink to about 55% by 2030, with the rest being taken up by renewable, natural gas and nuclear.

Although new coal plants are much less polluting than those built decades ago, there is little indication that hopes of turning coal into a true clean fuel through the use of techniques such as carbon sequestration are feasible.

PGE, the country's largest utility, recently backed out of a pilot plant being built in central Poland, that is supposed to investigate whether there is an economic case for pumping carbon underground. PGE decided that with the cost of carbon emissions credits in the EU Emissions Trading System hovering at about ?6 a tonne, while carbon sequestration costs 10 times as much, the scheme currently does not make much sense.

That leaves scope for a stronger focus on renewables. "Poland is facing an explosion in renewable energy investments," says Hann. "This is proof that regulatory systems can create miracles."

Renewables already make up just over 10% of Poland's energy production, however a significant portion comes from the questionable practice of dumping biomass ? largely wood and straw ? into coal-fired boilers to make them greener. The other main source of renewable power is wind, currently located mainly along the Baltic coast and with increasing interest in building offshore power stations. PGE has committed to spending more than ?3bn on offshore wind farms, which it hopes will replace part of its existing coal capacity.

Poland is also going to build up its natural gas generating capacity. Currently, almost no gas is used for power, with most of the 17bn cubic metres (cm) used by the country going to homes and industrial users. However, with Poland potentially sitting on large deposits of shale gas, the growth of gas in the energy mix is expected to increase, says PWC, the consultancy.

Nuclear controversy

Finally, Poland, like almost every other country in Central Europe, is looking at building up its nuclear power capacity. Poland was one of the few Soviet satellites that did not build a power plant in communist times, but the government is committed to opening two nuclear power stations by 2035.

The issue has divided Poland from Germany, where opposition to nuclear power is strong in the wake of the Japanese disaster at the Fukushima plant, but Warsaw is determined to go ahead despite the cost of about ?25bn. "There is no retreat from nuclear energy," insists Hann.

PGE will formally open a tender for technology suppliers later this year, and the contract has attracted interest from the US-Japanese group GE Hitachi, France's Areva and Westinghouse, a unit of Japan's Toshiba.

Power projects may also provide a new lifeline for Poland's troubled construction companies. Three large firms declared bankruptcy in recent months because they underbid for big highway projects and were then surprised by rising fuel, asphalt and steel prices. "This sector could occupy the space left from falling numbers of transport infrastructure projects following Euro 2012," writes Peter Attard Montalto, an analyst with Nomura.

Three Chinese astronauts return to Earth

Three Chinese astronauts returned to Earth as heroes on Friday after carrying out China's most complex and longest mission in orbit, vital steps in the country's effort to build a space station by 2020.

The 13-day voyage also saw China send a woman into space for the first time, and the nation's leaders celebrated as soon as the crew members emerged from their cramped return capsule smiling and seemingly in good health.

"This is... another outstanding contribution by the Chinese nation to human exploration and the use of outer space," Premier Wen Jiabao said, reading a statement representing all the top leaders.

"It has profound significance in enhancing China's comprehensive power and inspiring the national spirit."

The charred return capsule of the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft, which means Divine Vessel in Chinese, hit the ground in a remote area of northern China and rolled over on Friday morning after an approach slowed by a large parachute.

With the events broadcast across the nation on state-run television, the crew members spent another hour inside the capsule while medical workers checked on their conditions.

As the three were finally pulled out still wearing their white space suits, they waved, smiled and gave thumbs up signals, then made patriotic comments for the television audience.

"We have successfully accomplished the first manned docking mission for China and have now returned to home," said crew leader Jing Haipeng, 45, who has been on three of the country's four manned space missions.

"Thanks to our country, thanks to the care and love from people of all ethnic groups of the country. Thanks."

The history-making female member of the crew, Liu Yang, a 33-year-old air force pilot, was in similarly good spirits, saying she felt "warm and comfortable" throughout the trip.

During their mission the crew successfully carried out China's first manual space docking, an extremely difficult move that is essential in the process of building a space station -- which Beijing aims to do by 2020.

The manoeuvre -- completed by the Americans and Russians in the 1960s -- requires two vessels orbiting Earth at thousands of kilometres (miles) per hour to come together very gently to avoid destroying each other.

It was the main goal of the mission and the team rehearsed the procedure more than 1,500 times in simulations.

Morris Jones, an Australia-based independent expert on China's programme, said the length of the space flight -- the crew spent most of the 13 days in the Tiangong-1 module -- was more significant than the manual space docking.

"This is China's longest and most complex space flight to date," Jones said.

"The most important thing about the mission is something they haven't said openly and it's the fact that this Tiangong laboratory is more than just a laboratory. It is a proper space station, albeit a very small one."

China has spent 39 billion yuan ($6.1 billion) over the past two decades on its efforts to build a permanent manned space station, according to government figures.

The programme kicked off in 1999 with the launch of Shenzhou-1, with no crew on board.

Two years later, Shenzhou-2 lifted off with small animals aboard, and in 2003, China sent its first man into space. Since then, it has completed a space walk in 2008 and an unmanned docking between a module and rocket last year.

China sees its space programme as a symbol of its rising global stature, growing technical expertise, and the Communist Party's success in turning around the fortunes of the once poverty-stricken nation.

French space expert Isabelle Sourbes-Verger agreed the latest successful mission had helped cement China's status in these areas.

"By demonstrating that they master (these procedures), China fully enters the club of big powers in human occupation (of space)," said Sourbes-Verger, from France's National Centre for Scientific Research.

"The political objectives for the space programme -- to be able to demonstrate indisputable technological and scientific competence -- have been reached."

Mayor greets Olympic torch in sausage suit

LOUTH, England, June 29 (UPI) -- A British mayor showed up to greet the Olympic torch while dressed as a sausage to support a campaign to get protected status for Lincolnshire sausages.

Mayor Jill Makinson-Sanders of Louth, England, greeted the torch in her town Wednesday while dressed as a Lincolnshire sausage to show her support for the European Union granting status to the food that would protect manufacturers from outside imitators, This Is Grimsby reported Friday.

"I'm here as a member of the community -- not the mayor," Makinson-Sanders said. "Today is Louth Sausage Day. Louth welcomes the Olympic Torch and is proud to announce that the day will also be a celebration of sausages. There are free samples and sausage deals from all of the Louth butchers. I'm here support the Lincolnshire sausage and be part of this amazing day. So far the response has been very welcoming."

Casio Slim XJ-A246

The Casio XJ-A246 ($1,499.99 direct) is a formidable lightweight business projector, part of the company?s SLIM (aka Green Slim) line of projectors that uses Casio?s unique hybrid LED-laser light engine. This projector has a solid range of features including 2X zoom, automatic keystone correction, HDMI and Wi-Fi connectivity, and the ability to run presentations off a USB thumb drive. It produces vivid, bright images?though the colors are subject to occasional tinting.

The XJ-A246 is rated at 2,500 lumens, and the projector has WXGA (1,280 by 800) native resolution. Instead of producing red, green, and blue using a standard lamp and a color wheel, it produces red with LEDs, blue with lasers, and green by shining blue laser light on a phosphor. Its optical system directs the red, green, and blue light to the DLP chip, and out the front lens. Its LED lamp is designed to last up to 20,000 hours, far longer than typical projector bulbs?and it?s mercury free. The projector (including the bulb) is backed by a generous 3-year warranty.

Ports include VGA; a single AV-in jack (included an AV cord with a plug to fit the jack; at the other end are 3 RCA jacks for composite video); HDMI; RS-232C; and a USB type A port. You can run presentations computer free off a USB thumb drive plugged into the port, or you can attach a wireless LAN adapter; with it you can connect wirelessly with WiFi-enabled Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile smartphones and computers (PC or Mac) running MobiShow software, so you can run a presentation from these devices. Up to 32 computers can be connected at one time and users can also view content from up to four PCs on an individual screen simultaneously.

The XJ-A246 also includes auto brightness adjustment, which uses built-in light sensors to automatically adjust the brightness level of the projection to suit the lighting conditions in the surrounding environment.

In brightness, resolution, and features, the XJ-A246 is very similar to the Casio Signature XJ-M245 ($1,299.99 direct, 3 stars), except that the Signature is larger and weighs 8.6 pounds, making it more suitable for classrooms and conference rooms than for taking on the road.

I tested the projector with it placed about 10 feet away from our test screen. The XJ-A246 offers automatic keystone correction and a generous 2X zoom (controlled through the remote), allowing for versatility in the projector?s placement. The focus is also adjusted incrementally through the remote, and with a little practice I was able to achieve a reasonably sharp focus.

?Data and Video Image Quality

In my testing using the DisplayMate suite of tests, the XJ-A246 showed decent image quality. There was occasional tinting, with some light grays looking slightly greenish and darker grays with a hint of red. Colors were somewhat better in Graphics than in Standard mode, though there was still modest tinting. White-on-black type was fuzzy at the smallest two sizes, and showed some tinting as well. Image quality is fine for typical business presentations, at least ones in which color fidelity isn?t critical.

The video was of a quality suitable for use with shorter clips as part of a presentation. Colors were bright and well saturated, sometimes to the point of punchiness. There was some loss of detail in brighter areas. The rainbow effect?the appearance of little red-green-blue flashes, particularly in scenes with high contrast between dark and light areas?was frequently visible. Most DLP projectors show at least a trace of the effect, but with the XJ-A246 it was more obvious than usual, and would likely be very distracting to people who are sensitive to it.

Other Issues

Audio, from the projector?s 1-watt built-in speaker, was of decent volume and reasonably clear, sufficient to fill a small conference room.

The Casio XJ-A246 has a good feature set for a portable projector: a weight of 5 pounds and a thin form factor; a range of connectivity choices including HDMI and WiFi (with an included adapter). It sports Casio?s unique hybrid LED/laser DLP light engine; its LED light source is designed to last 20,000 hours, and should never need to be replaced. Its data image quality is good for typical business presentations, but tinting was enough of an issue that I?d hesitate to use it for material where accurate color is paramount.

The Editors? Choice Epson PowerLite 1775W Multimedia Projector has a mere 4,000-hour claimed lamp life, while many projectors offer even less. But the 1775W otherwise shines, so to speak?it weighs just 3.8 pounds: it also provides Wi-Fi connectivity; HDMI, and a port for a USB thumb drive. Its image quality for both data and video proved better in our testing than the XJ-A246, and it?s also brighter?rated at 3,000 lumens.

(AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered an overhaul of the upper house of Parliament in an apparent reaction to criticism that the Federation Council is little more than a vacation retreat for officials.

Putin said in an address to the Council on Wednesday that the reforms should make it "more democratic."

Members are currently elected by local legislatures. Putin's bill, which is expected to get parliamentary approval, would allow elected regional governors to appoint a member of their team to the Council. The reform would make elected governors accountable for the members they appoint.

Putin said prospective members of the Council, widely seen as a rubber stamp for the Kremlin, should be members of their local legislatures and residents of the regions they represent for at least five years.

Sarah Polley Take This Waltz Interview

Canadian actor/director Sarah Polley's latest directorial venture, Take This Waltz, strays into uncomfortable territory: we follow a young woman (Margot, played by Michelle Williams) who contemplates leaving her doting husband (a subdued Seth Rogen) for the new titillating neighbor (Luke Kirby). The movie floats through a colourful Toronto landscape as Margot bounces between commitment to her husband and curiosity about the new guy. Moviefone caught up with Polley at the Toronto Film Festival to discuss love, non-salacious nudity and why this movie is making some people feel unsettled.

I felt like this movie was a commentary on human relationships. Would you agree with that?
Yeah, I do. I think, more to the point, it's about the idea that generally in life we feel there's something missing and we try to figure out a way of covering that space and going after things to fill it. We assume that we'll then feel fundamentally different about being alive when we've fulfilled that thing. So the most obvious thing to explore that concept was desire and falling in love. I think that's the way we think we'll be able to reinvent ourselves, reinvent our lives and take away the gap within us. So I wanted to explore that and how difficult it is to actually feel like something isn't missing.

Why the oversaturation, the heightened color of the film?
Well, I thought if I make a film about desire, I really want to embrace and go into how it feels when you first fall in love or fall in lust. The world does come alive, it's in Technicolor, things pop and you notice colour where you didn't notice colour and you notice sound where you didn't notice sound. It's like all of your senses are heightened into this hyper-real state. So I wanted the audience to have the experience that Margot has, of just falling into that sweltering desire at the beginning of a relationship.

I also wanted to capture Toronto in the somewhat-romanticized way I experience Toronto, which is through rose-coloured glasses. I do feel in the summer, when it's humid, hot and sticky that it's kind of a sexy, hot, humid, popping colourful place. I think you have to live here to discover that side of it -- Toronto's not necessarily a city that jumps out at you if you're here for five nights. But if you actually live in the downtown area, where there's amazing residential areas in the middle of this urban environment, it's pretty amazing.

You told me that this movie is your love song to Toronto. Were the locations that you used in the movie areas that you were familiar with, or did you discover any new places?
Some of them I certainly knew, like Kensington Market, more iconic places like that. But we discovered a lot as well. The location scouting was awesome, because a lot of it was just walking down streets with the production designer and seeing the city anew and finding corners and pockets that we didn't know about, but were very close to us.

Very cool. I really liked the fact you used the Centre Island Scrambler in the movie.
That is actually one of my favorite things to do in Toronto -- that's autobiographical.

Do they actually play that song there ['Video Killed the Radio Star', featured in the movie]?take this waltz
When I've been on it a couple times. They've played that song and the ride is infinitely better when they do. To the point where I sometimes try to make my way to the booth in the dark to ask them if they can play that song instead. They're generally kind of grumpy with the request, but it's awesome. I will go on it 11 times, sometimes alone as a grown woman, and it's kind of scary.

Were you trying to differentiate between sexual love and friendship love? With Seth Rogen, Williams has the jokey, friendship-y type of love, and there isn't so much of a sexual connection there.
I wouldn't say trying to differentiate, but I do feel like I wanted to explore what happens to a sexual relationship when you become very familiar with each other. Like, does it end the passion or can those two things co-exist? I've seen passion and familiarity co-exist, but it's rare and it's difficult. Because, in a strange way, a lot of romantic love and a lot of that passionate, honeymoon period is a lot about the mystery of the other, so what happens when that mystery goes away?

There's this great line that Bette Davis says: "50 percent of a woman's charm is mystery." I think that's not just women, I think it's men too, and I think that we lose our charm to each other somewhat when we lose our mystery. So then what? And I think that's the question that it's hard for us to ask generally, "So then what?" It's not a question we're prepared for. We're just supposed to find the person we're in love with and settle down, and everything's gonna be great, but it takes a lot of work, I think. It also involved being satisfied that things aren't always going to be perfect. And that doesn't necessarily mean the end of the world.

The nudity was refreshing because it wasn't so salacious; it was more respectful in a way. Was that your intention?
I just didn't want to shy away from nudity in the film because I've had so many conversations with older women, with friends in the shower at the YWCA ... I've always just wondered, it's so weird that I wouldn't be able to put this in a movie without everybody making a really big deal out of it. So I just thought, "Screw it, I'm gonna do it. I don't care if people make a big deal out of it." I wanted to show women's bodies honestly, the way they look and not oversexualized or over-lit all the time. There's a lot of incidental nudity in the film, and there's sexual nudity as well, but if I'm going to have sexual nudity, I also want to have incidental nudity because somehow otherwise it's dishonest.

Tell me more about the pool aerobics scene with that Aquafit instructor, because honestly, I was crying with laughter.
Oh, I'm so glad! That's definitely a function of finding a really awesome actor and letting him go. And it was really funny because I said, "Maybe we can go to a couple classes just to get a sense of what the classes are like." And I'd written a little bit for the instructor, based on the instructors I've had. But I'm a very non-athletic person, so that was a huge challenge for me. Damien really took the role and ran with it... literally!

What's it like working with traditionally funny people like Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman and then putting them into more dramatic roles?
It was amazing. It was intimidating, but it was great. I always felt like both Sarah and Seth had great dramatic performances in them. And as a fan of both of theirs, I've always hungered to see them do dramatic stuff. It was kind of a selfish move on my part, just wanting to see them in a movie doing that. The weird thing about Seth Rogen is, as much as he's a great comedian, he might be an even better dramatic actor.

Michelle Williams is fantastic. Is there any particular element that you try to infuse in your female characters?
Yeah, we had lots of talks. Michelle's quite a bit like Julie Christie in that she's one of the best actresses in the world, who could do anything on their own, but actually wants and likes a lot of direction. So we had long, very intensive conversations about the character. And it's a complicated character. She's not always necessarily sympathetic to every audience member and she's not always completely understanding.

I think it's a very, very tricky tightrope walk to play that character and not go extremely one way or the other. What I find fascinating about this film is that people really project their own relationship history onto it. So there are people who are like, "I loved Margot! Finally somebody made a film that I can relate to" and other people are like, "I just wanted to kill her, she's so selfish." I'm so thrilled by that because I feel like people are projecting their own lives onto the film and feeling passionate and somehow supporting their point of view. Even what she does at the end -- there are some people who have judged it so intensely. It makes me so happy to know that people are that invested in the film.

Lindsay Lohan to Cost (or Make) Lifetime Tens of Millions?

Hiring Lindsay Lohan is clearly a high-risk, high-reward endeavor.

The last month made that abundantly clear, but which way will it break for Lifetime? That remains to be seen, but she's got the Liz & Dick producers spooked.

Having hired Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor, the network received more publicity than they could've dreamed ... but not always for the reasons they'd like.

Understandably, higher-ups are upset and worried over her car accident and the recent episode in which she passed out so hard people had to call 911.

Lindsay Lohan Elizabeth Taylor Photo

Three weeks into filming, producers are fearing the following:

  • That the company who insured Lindsay Lohan might bail
  • That her probation will be violated for lying to police
  • That she will get into yet another bad car accident
  • That she'll surround herself with the wrong people
  • That her exhaustion was a warning sign

On the flip side, if the worst case scenario doesn't happen ... think about all the PR she's getting! Has anyone ever talked this much about a Lifetime film?

Okay, the one in which LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian decided to be home wreckers was kinda big ... as was the one starring Jennifer Love Hewitt's breasts.

LiLo could blow them both out of the water, though ... if she doesn't completely self-destruct. The million-dollar question: Can she keep it together?!

?

So Dang hotttttttt........ So Dang hotttttttt??..

?

Two teenagers got a painful surprise last Friday when a woman they tried to attack turned out to be a martial arts expert.Priscilla Dang was going for a run in a Vancouver, Wash., neighborhood when she was stopped by two teenagers, ages 16 and 18, on bikes, according to KATU.

One of the teens pulled in front of the 23-year-old and ?made eye contact with [her],? while the other reportedly groped her from behind.

Little did the alleged attackers know, Dang has been studying kung fu for the past 18 years at the Summit Wushu Academy, a martial arts school owned by her family.

Dang immediately threw the teen in front of her down to the ground and made him apologize, The Colombian reports.

Her martial arts background really kicked in soon after, when the other teen starting calling her an unspecified derogatory term.

The 5-foot-4-inch kung fu expert said something snapped within her and she began punching the loudmouth kid.

?I came up for another one and I got him good, and I think that upset him,? Dang told KATU. ?I think they knew they messed with the wrong girl.?

That?s when one of the teens pulled out a pocketknife.

Dang picked up the teen?s bicycle and held it in front of her as a shield until two passerbys saw the altercation and called 911, The Colombian reports.

Both teens fled the scene before the police arrived but were later apprehended.

The 18-year-old, identified as Josiah Sullivan, faces charges of fourth-degree assault, while the 16-year-old faces a hearing by a juvenile prosecutor.

Nerf Unleashes Furthest-Shooting Weapons In Its Arsenal: N-Strike Elite Blasters

IMG_5440Last night I went to a magical party. There was food, which is always good, and booze, better still, but neither of these integral ingredients played a part in the magic. Nerf's new N-Strike Elite line of dart blasters did. The company unveiled the latest in their line of N-Strike blasters, the farthest-shooting toy guns in the company's entire product portfolio, boasting a 75-foot trajectory. The Elite line includes three separate blasters, the Hail-Fire, the Rampage, and the Retaliator (by the way, is it just me, or are these super angry names?).

Rio+20 earth summit: Why Hillary Clinton won applause for statement on women

The UN's Rio+20 earth summit set only modest goals, but sparked controversy over the Vatican's successful effort to remove reference to 'reproductive rights' from the final document. Hillary Clinton vowed the US would ensure 'those rights are respected.'

The United Nations? global summit on sustainable development concluded in Rio de Janeiro Friday with only modest and nonbinding goals, and in the eyes of some critics it even took a giant step backwards ? by eliminating from its final document any reference to women?s ?reproductive rights? of the kind that has figured in similar summits? statements for the past two decades.

The Rio+20 summit ? so named because it took place 20 years after the landmark Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit of 1992 ? underwhelmed leaders and private-sector participants alike for its lack of bold initiatives and landmark treaties, such as the biodiversity and greenhouse-gas initiatives that came out of the first Rio summit.

But Rio+20 nevertheless generated controversy over the successful campaign by the Vatican and developing countries to eliminate any reference to reproductive rights from the summit?s final text.

The document still advocates universal access to family planning and the integration of reproductive health into national development strategies. But a reference to reproductive rights ? language similar to wording that has long been included in development and women-advancement summits? statements ? was stricken, while the Vatican prevailed in its opposition to a phrase that called ?access to reproductive health services? an important element of women?s empowerment.

Numerous world summits have called on governments to recognize the role that reproductive health plays in advancing women?s health and economic well-being since a 1994 Cairo summit on population and development declared for the first time that women?s human rights include reproductive rights.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who attended the summit?s closing session Friday, seemed to chide global leaders over the retreat on women?s rights as she underscored the US commitment to ?reproductive rights.? Clinton received enthusiastic applause when she said, ?Women must be empowered to make decisions about whether and when to have children,? and then added that the US ?will continue to work to ensure that those rights are respected in international agreements.?

Several prominent advocates of women?s rights criticized the summit?s final document and its vague or absent wording on gender issues. Gro Harlem Brundtland, a former Norwegian prime minister and a member of The Elders, a group of global statesmen formed by Nelson Mandela in 2007, called the wording ?a step backwards from previous agreements.?

A group of human rights advocacy organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the Center for International Environmental Law, issued a statement citing Rio?s ?worryingly minimal commitments? as evidence that ?global economic troubles are being matched by a recession in human rights.?

In addition to the reproductive rights omission, the organizations said the summit fell short on issues of corporate accountability. They pointed specifically to a successful effort ? this one backed by the US ? to delete a reference reaffirming the responsibility of business to respect universal human rights.

In her speech, Secretary Clinton focused on what she called a remarkable evolution in thinking about and carrying out sustainable development, a change she said has included a broadening of the actors leading on development from governments and international institutions to include private players ? such as business.

Citing what she called the growing ?power of the market? in spreading development and raising millions of people out of poverty, Clinton noted that the official development assistance share of total capital flows into developing countries has tumbled from 70 percent in the 1960s to only 13 percent today.

With that shift in investment in developing countries to a predominant role for business and nongovernmental organizations has come new ways of thinking, she said.

Saying ?the most compelling products of this conference are the examples of new thinking that can lead to models for future action,? Clinton then cited one of America?s, and the world?s, most visionary entrepreneurs of the 21st century. ?It should be said of Rio,? she said, ?that people left here thinking, as the late Steve Jobs put it, not just big, but different.??

CATERING FOR VEGAN CHILDREN'S BIRTHDAY PARTIES

Vegan childrens birthday parties can result in challenges over how best to cater to vegan tastes without having to significantly adjust meal plans. The problem is made worse by having to dealing with different vegetarian and vegan tastes, which can overlap and makes it difficult to arrange a general meal. However, you can solve these problems by simply checking, planning, and ensuring that there are plenty of vegan food options and considerations taken when catering a party. From being attentive to basic food types, through to being creative with vegan food, and remembering to check labels for sweets, you can create a party that will satisfy different tastes.

Basic Checking

Vegan children may have quite an extensive list of foods that they can and can?t eat. Always check with parents beforehand about how strict a vegan a child is. A younger child may not be as strict as a younger teenager. At the same time, ask parents about the kinds of food that they normally eat, and think about whether specific items can be included to make a child feel more at home at the party.

General Foods to Consider

It?s hard to go wrong with fresh fruit and vegetables, either dried or fresh in the former, or mixed in with salads. Cut up salads can be included with vegan sandwich spreads and hummus, as well as different kinds of crusty bread and other condiments. Margarine and marmite tends to be fine for vegans. Sandwiches can also be enhanced for vegans by including a plate that features vegan ham or Tofurkey, as well as vegan cheeses. These kind of cheeses are typically available from supermarkets, and can be bought specifically for the party. In the same way, you can invest in some vegan sausages and vegan fish fingers.

Snacking

In terms of the general kinds of snacks that you can leave out, most biscuits are fine for vegans, as are most kinds of crisps. Meat byproduct labels should always be checked though, while it is worth doing some additional research on the kinds of brands available. Another good option to consider is mini potato salads with rice and couscous.

Mains

If you want to include a sit down option for a birthday party, you can serve vegans with salads, and vegan substituted meats, as well as pizzas that use vegetable toppings. Squashes and fried tofu are particularly delicious, and can be used with different flavourings and dips for a more comprehensive meal.

Sweets and Drinks

Make sure that any sweets include dairy and egg free recipes, and use sprinkles for cakes that include vegan ingredients. If in doubt, invest in vegan cakes as a side dish, as well as a selection of dairy free ice creams. Try to avoid dairy milk in milkshakes and teas, and think about having a good selection of natural fruit drinks on hand. Catering for a vegan party is more difficult than catering for vegetarians, but will make things easier in the long run in terms of not making children feel singled out for their diet. Encourage other children to sample the vegan dishes, but make sure that there is enough there for vegan guests.
