FANTASY FOOTBALL: HOLD 'EM OR FOLD 'EM, Fantasy ...

Do you know the reason all of my Fantasy pieces have a poker theme to them? It?s because Fantasy Sports and poker are rather similar. If you?ve followed me from the beginning, you?ve heard the next part, but for those new to my work (where have you been, by the way?), playing Fantasy Sports is a style of gambling. You bet on performances; and that involves similarities such as finding the best values, knowing the odds and building the best ?hand? in order to win.

My nickname, ?All In,? actually came from my early poker days. It?s actually ?All in Kid,? but I shortened it for a better flow, and while I may look like a kid, I?m far from it. When I started playing poker, specifically Texas Hold ?Em, I had one move? going all in. Whether I was trying to bluff or truly had a big hand, I pushed my chips all in for my bet. Obviously, the others caught on quick (again, I was a newbie), and by seeing how the house cards played out, they could normally figure out if I was bluffing or had a great hand. That led to one of my friends finally saying, ?Dang. You?re always going all in kid.? And hence the nickname.

While you can?t go ?all in? in Fantasy Sports per se, you can place your bets on the right players. Just like poker, the best hand (team) will win the majority of the time. Sure, a off-suit 2-7 will beat a pair of aces once in a blue moon, just as Jay Feely and Alex Smith teamed up to kill Fantasy owners of Philip Rivers and Adrian Peterson in Week 14 last year. That is the worst, but it?s also proof that there is an inherent amount of luck involved; luck that you can never predict.

With all of that in mind, I?m going to give you my 2011 Hold ?Ems and Fold ?Ems. Continuing the theme of gambling, there is a lucky 21 for Hold ?Em and unlucky 13 for Fold ?Em. Remember, I don?t hate the 13 or drool over the 21; it?s simply in relation to their value in performance and perception. In the end, this list will increase your odds to take home the championship and cash in those winnings? just don?t blame me when Darren Sproles outscores Arian Foster one week and gives you a loss.
