Marriage Equality in New York! | Jack Fertig: Star Currents

Marriage Equality became law in New York on Friday, June 24, at 11:55 pm as Gov. Cuomo signed the bill in Albany. A month later the law will go into effect, more than doubling the number of Americans to 11% of the population who will soon enjoy marriage equality at the state level.

(Alas, this still has no bearing on federal status such as social security, federal taxes, or veteran?s benefits, but that is ?evolving?. I still think that California?s Proposition 8 will get to the Supreme Court triggering a ruling for national marriage equality.)

Appropriately, Uranus, the queer planet was in the ascendant on the apex of a t-square between Pluto in Capricorn in the 10th house and Sun in Cancer in the 4th. The Sun, as the fastest ?planet,? is the trigger here bringing the Uranus-Pluto promise of change into the domestic realm (Cancer, 4th house). The Sun-Pluto opposition is also trisected by harmonious trines and sextiles with Neptune in Chiron in Pisces in the 12th house (all about healing, but can also reflect back-room deals) and Jupiter in Taurus in the second. This will be good for the state economy!

Actually this T-Square is just part of a grand cross with Saturn in Libra in the 8th house, very much about death, taxes, and sexual contracts. Saturn is trine Mars (3d house) and Venus in Gemini and square to Sun (both 4th house) and Mercury in Cancer (5th house), suggesting a lot of discussion ensuing about monogamy and open relationships in same-sex marriages, especially among men.

Moon and Eris are conjunct in Aries opposing Saturn and squaring Mercury. This t-square promises further dispute on this issue. Saturn is the only planet in this T-square and the grand cross, suggesting this bone of contention over sexual values will be a sideshow that has marginal (if any) effect on the progress of marriage equality. I would like to say: Grow up, already. There have always been open marriages among heterosexual couples, and what people do behind closed doors is their own business.

Still, men and women are different. In the wake of political scandals (Kahn, Schwartzenegger, and Weiner most recently) the question of male sexuality under a contract of two men, not a man and a woman, will not remain unasked, and naysayers may look at open gay male relationships as ?making a mockery of marriage.? I rather think committed male couples, both open and monogamous, will model sexual patterns that shed a bit more light on male sexuality, love, and commitment. But this is essentially a different issue, a huge one to be explored elsewhere.

Even among heterosexuals, there is no one right way to be married and each couple has to find their own way. The fact that homosexuals have been so long outside the rules has encouraged us to explore and improvise a lot more. Will including us in the system make us dull followers of tradition? Some. And more, gay men who are much less queer, who never would have come out of the closet in the 1970?s but will feel safer to do so now, may come out so they can settle into suburban homo-monogamy, perhaps adopting a bunch of kids and joining the PTA.

The Stonewall Rebellion was started by radical gay men, lesbians, and transgenders in 1969 on the heels of a Uranus-Pluto conjunction that was at the heart of the ?sexual revolution? of the 60?s. Conjunctions (like a new moon) signal the beginning of a cycle. Now Pluto and Uranus are at square (first quarter) signaling a turning point, a taking root, breaking ground, and establishing a basis for future growth. This cycle will peak (like a full moon) around 2047 when Uranus in Virgo (where it was under the conjunction!) will oppose Pluto. We will have marriage equality in the US long before that, but this is a global movement, and marriage equality ? and more widely ?civil unions? of various sorts ? are already law in parts of western Europe and Latin America. After this ?full moon? climax, depending on the foundations built, the cycle will turn to decline or fulfillment. At the next conjunction in 2104 same sex couples may be so commonplace, people will wonder that anyone ever cared.
